Abstract

This chapter aims to highlight the role of higher education institutions on the economy of developing countries. The role of information technology (IT) is critical to driving the quality of higher education. In addition, this chapter underlines the importance of preparing policy and policy regarding the implementation of information communication technologies, such as e-learning applications, as branding and service differentiation in order to create quality strategies within competitive higher education market.

Abstract

Problem Statement: Work-based learning programmes have become an increasingly popular way of fulfilling the desire for life-long learning; multi-dimensional work-based learning modes have recently played a large role in both personal and institutional development. The peculiarity of this innovative way of learning derives from the fact that learning is gained from work experience. Work-based learning programmes were pioneered in undergraduate, graduate and doctorate programmes. This learning process represents a unique approach to knowledge and has created a new paradigm in educational thinking, with a specific epistemology and methodology. The learning cycle relies on active learning through work experience, with an emphasis on project management capability. In addition, it provides an opportunity for researchers to engage in on-line discussions with tutors and fellow students. In this respect, the role of the online peer support process in work-based research projects is worth investigating. Purpose of the Study: This study aimed to determine how the use of online communication tools for peer support within the work-based learning paradigm impacts learners' self-development. Specifically, it focused on whether peer-supportered and -supportive roles enacted via on-line tools in work-based learning programmes enhanced learners' collaboration and research management skills. It also examined whether online communication facilitated critical thinking. Methods: The research conducted was qualitative in nature, with a case study approach. In-depth interviews, self-reports and researcher observations were the data collection techniques used to explore the experiences of participants in relation to the research focus. Triangulation was employed with multiple data analysis. Findings and Results: This study unveiled the benefits of peer supporter-ed friendships within work-based learning programmes to the construction of work-based projects grounded in bounded rationality. It should be highlighted that online communication tools are extremely useful to candidates who are studying and communicating from a distance. Significantly, the findings demonstrated that being engaged in different research contexts is not a barrier to learning; online communication tools provide users with the opportunity to give mutual support. The research presented here highlighted the ways in which online communication tools facilitate critical thinking, collaboration and research management skills. Conclusions and Recommendations: It is proposed that a model for work- based learning that explores candidates' roles as peer supporters be developed, so as to further the building of critical friendships through online communication. It is also urged that collaborative effort be encouraged as a means of achieving plausible outcomes within the work- based research process.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the impact of a videotaped simulated instructional model on prospective language teachers’ co-construction of knowledge with the help of their peers and their supervisor in microteaching sessions. Within the framework of action research, a three-phase collaborative coaching model (TCCM) was developed to encourage trainees’ reflection and instructional awareness regarding teaching and learning processes in videotaped simulated instruction. The implementation of the strategies of qualitative data and method triangulation and collaborative data analysis procedures helped the cross-examination and verification of the data which increased the credibility and objectivity of the research. The analysis of multiple data indicated that the three-phase videotaped simulated instruction is a viable model for trainees’ professional growth. Being involved in video-mediated collaborative teaching and dialogue provided trainees with invaluable opportunities for an in-depth analysis of instructional processes, which raised not only their reflective skills but also professional awareness and development.

Impact of Prospective Teachers’ Self Control and Knowledge Management in Compiling a Reflective Portfolio

Abstract

Within the framework of action research, connectivity theory has been suggested as a means to encourage learners to manage the process during the teaching practicum. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of self-control and knowledge management abilities of prospective teachers in compiling a reflective portfolio in teaching practice as a part of a teaching practicum course. 44 prospective teachers participated in this study. In the study, qualitative research (i.e. semi structured interviews and reflective reports) was used. Research findings show that the prospective teachers require both self-control and the ability to manage knowledge in compiling a reflective portfolio. Self-control and self-learning through dialogue and negotiation with peers and course tutors enhance the prospective teachers’ reflection, ability in intellectual flexibility and skills in knowledge management. In addition to this, the research findings highlight how connectivity theory can be implemented in course instruction and enhance the professional experience through reflective portfolio

Bu çalışmada eylem çalışmasına bağlı, bağlantı teorisinin öğretim sürecinde uygulanması ele alınmıştır. Araştırmaya 44 aday öğretmen katılmıştır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma çerçevesinde yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat ve yansıtıcı raporlar veri toplama süreci olarak kullanılmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, öğretmen adayının yansıtıcı ürün dosyası geliştirmesinde öz denetim ve bilgi yönetimi becerisine sahip olması gerektiğini ve yansıtıcı ürün dosyası kullanımının bu becerilere katkı sağladığını göstermektedir. Öğretmen adaylarının sahip olduğu öz denetim ve arkadaşları ile kurmuş olduğu diyalog, müzakere kullanarak bilgiyi yönetmede etkili olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Öz denetim ve öz disiplin ile öğretmen adaylarının arkadaşlarıyla ve öğretmen ile arasında kurduğu diyalog ve münazara aynı zamanda yansıtıcı ve esnek düşünme becerisine de katkı sağlamıştır. Buna ek olarak, araştırma bulguları bağlantı teorisinin yansıtıcı ürün dosyası kullanarak ders tasarımında uygulanabileceğini ve mesleki beceriye katkısı olacağını vurgulamıştır.

Abstract

In the digital age, the re-construction of knowledge can be enriched through technology enhanced learning environments. The question arise on whether learners, teachers are capable to use technology in a right and productive way to support learning. In this respect, this research study aimed to examine the awareness of learners and the teachers in internalization of digital literacy skill within the framework of digital citizenship as regards the right behaviours while using technology in the life. Further to this, study aimed to develop their awareness of digital literacy based on an action research learning cycle. In this respect, research stands on activity theory as a theoretical framework. Qualitative research was employed and case study approach was implemented to enrich the awareness of learners and teachers about digital citizenship based on a sense of action learning. Data analysis was done based on thematic analysis for reflective reports. Research findings indicated that learners and teachers developed their awareness of digital citizenship upon this research process; however it is crucial to integrate digital literacy and digital citizenship into curriculum and course designs for the future in all levels of education in order to make global citizen. This research study gives an insight on being readiness to adapt global citizen through internalizing digital literacy and citizenship. Further to this, exploring digital literacy skill needs to be considered from the pre-school education levels.

Abstract

Peace education process, tolerance and mutual understanding plays a great role to decide the right attitudes in education. Education human being through spirits of love and peace is essential. This research aims to evaluate key terms on the integration and implementation of peace education and peace related elements in national curriculum and the role of technology and management in tolerance education. This qualitative research examines the role of technology and management in tolerance and reconciliation education. Document and content analysis were done. Further to this, interview forms and determining current situation of Northern part of Cyprus that ladder and matrix analysis of data was conducted. It is revealed that technology and management are crucial for establishing tolerance and reconciliation education. In the Northern part of Cyprus, there are attempts to proceed tolerance education through support of transformation in education.

Abstract

This explanatory analysis of the relevant literature seeks to identify factors affecting quality in massive open online courses (MOOCs). The paper highlights sub-dimensions of quality in MOOCs using the ladder of analytical abstraction. Communication, trust, collaboration, inclusiveness, innovation, and commitment are identified as key elements in developing a quality culture in online education. In seeking to merge the organizational and pedagogical aspects of online education, MOOCs raise new questions concerning personalization, widening recruitment, internationalization or globalization, and lifelong learning. However, the pedagogical aspects of MOOCs remain insufficiently described and explored. As MOOCs are now a significant presence in digital education, it is essential to understand learners’ experiences and participation in such courses.

Abstract

Transformation of learning and teaching in higher education now offers greater educational equality through enhanced access and collaboration within the framework of lifelong learning in the digital age. This study aims to evaluate online peer learning and assessment in the collaborative learning process in higher education practices. The study also investigates the impact of online peer learning on the development of skills within collaborative learning through the use of volunteered responses from learners concerning their experiences with and perceptions of online learning. Therefore, a quantitative approach is applied through the administration of a survey with 32 items that is distributed to 715 participants. According to the objective of the study, a set of inferential statistical analyses are performed. The theoretical framework of this study is the CHAT (cultural historical activity theory) which reconstructs the knowledge of learners through the application of the Adobe Connect program to demonstrate how learners can be collaborative and social with their peers in an online context. The results revealed that the collaborative online peer learning process in higher education encourages critical reflection and self-assessment. The study contributes to the understanding of the value of learner satisfaction in online collaborative learning environments through the experiences of learners.
