Assist. Prof. Dr. of Analytical Chemistry
Near East University, Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy
Usama ALSHANA was born in 1977 in Khanyounis, Gaza Strip, Palestine. He graduated from Haroun Ar-Rasheed High School in 1995. He received his BSc. degree from Middle East Technical University, Department of Chemistry in 2001 and his MSc. degree in analytical chemistry from the same faculty in 2004. In 2013, he was awarded a Ph.D. degree from the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy at Gazi University. His Ph.D. thesis, supervised by Prof. Dr. Nusret ERTAŞ and Prof. Dr. O. Yavuz ATAMAN, was entitled ‘‘Speciation studies by capillary electrophoresis (CE) and high-performance liquid chromatography-hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC-HG-AFS)’’. Dr. Usama ALSHANA joined the Faculty of Pharmacy at Near East University in September 2015 as Assist. Prof. Dr. of Analytical Chemistry and is currently the head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry. He is teaching theoretical and experimental analytical chemistry as well as conducting research with graduate students. His research interests include chromatographic and electrodriven separations, elemental speciation analysis, microextractions and green analytical chemistry.

ASSESSING THE HUMAN HEALTH RISKS FROM EXPOSURE OF ARSENIC IN DRINKING WATER THROUGH MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGICAL APPROACHES. TÜBİTAK Proje No: 109S419, Proje Yürütücüsü: Prof.Dr. Sema BURGAZ This research has been carried out in three areas having different As levels in drinking water (>50?g/l; Dadağı, Küçükayhan, Emmiler and Gülpınar villages;10-50 ?g/l; Kızılkaya and Yassıca vilages; <10?g/l; as a control area; Eskiyaylacık, Civelek, Alkan and Altıpınar villages). 185 subjects from control area and 420 subjects from areas with As levels in water between 10 and >50 ?g/l have been involved in this study. Time-weighted average-As (TWA-As;µg/l ) levels in water have ranged from 62.10 and 134.30 for >50 µg/l As levels in water area, those from 18.33 and 36.39 for 10-50µg/l As levels in water area, those from 0.40 and 0.85 for control area. Urinary total As and total As species (AsIII, AsV, MMAV ve DMAV) levels of subjects living at As polluted water areas are significantly higher (p<0.001) than those of control subjects and also dose-related with As levels in water. As levels in hair samples indicate that chronic exposure to As is evident and drinking water is suggested to be principal factor for As exposure. As-induced genotoxicity parameters have been observed in peripheral lymphocytes and/or buccal cells from subjects living at areas with 10-50µg/l As and >50µg/l As in water. Our results indicate that As metabolism (DMA/MMA) is slightly influenced by AS3MT polymorphism. However, none of the other polymorphisms (GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1 ve GSTO1-1) affected As metabolism significantly. We do not observe elevated levels of skin lesions in subjects living in highly exposed As area and no effect of most of genetic polymorphisms on the frequency of skin lesions are found. In As exposed individuals only GSTT1 null genotype resulted increased buccal-MN frequency among all genotoxicity parameters. Based on lymphocyte-MN frequencies as a cancer predictivity marker revealed an increased genotoxicity risk in this region due to the As exposure. Therefore, it is crucial to give importance to cancer registry activities in the region.
