Are we Ready for Medical Tourism? A New Medical Readiness Model for Small Islands: A Case of North Cyprus

Conference Paper 3rd Global Conference on Business, Economics, Management, and Tourism (BEMTUR 2015), Volume -, Issue -, 2015, Pages -

Abstract

-Alternative tourism is a global growing term when it comes to competitiveness of destinations. Small Islands are mostly micro states with limited resources in terms of human, physical, land and financial assets. Tourism can play a vital role in the survival and development of especially, medial tourism (MT). Recently medical tourism was pointed as one of those alternatives among other types of tourism. Third age people are generally the most significant target group in medical tourism. This paper aimed to explore critical readiness factors in MT and to investigate the status of North Cyprus (TRNC) to suggest a new integrative MT readiness model. Firstly, the required criteria for designing such an alternative tourism were collected from the literature review. This survey proposed to apply the criteria based on a new developed model suggested as “Proposed Supply and Demand Model of Medical Tourism. Then the experts opinion were asked by Delphi characterized questionnaire. To analyze data, Target Network Model hired to detect the supply condition based on the required criteria. Applying Target Network Model resulted in four separated sections; create, maintain, abstinence and review. Each section determined a specific strategy required for the mentioned subgroups in it. The significant point here is that North Cyprus has an economy relies on two main sectors, namely education and tourism. Third age group tourist would be the best tourism fit, considering the island's absolute advantage, like clean climate, ease of accessibility, low crime rate and literate people. Already there aimed age group of tourists coming to the island for other tourism purposes especially from England. This study is one of the first attempts to develop and test a new medical tourism model which puts forward practical implications for further studies in the region as well.
