The relationship between the facial nerve and the retromandibular vein

Original Article Karadeniz Tıp Dergisi, Volume 5, Issue 5, 1992, Pages 3

Abstract

The relationship between the facial nerve and the retromandibular vein To avoid the complications that may arise from the injury to the facial nerve in parotid surgery, the relationship between the facial nerve and the retromandibular vein was investigated. 50 dissections were performed on 30 cadavers. It was found that, in 45(90%) of teh cases the retromandibular vein was coursing on the medial side of the upper and lower trunks of facial nerve. In 5 (10%) of the cases, the course of the retromandibular vein was divided to subgroups. The most commonly encountered variation was that the retromandibular vein crossed the facial nerve from its medial and lateral sides and at a point between it bifurcation and ramification on the lower trunk (75.6%, 60%). In one case, retromandibular vein was detected passing from the lateral side of facial nerve at the bifurcation point. In 3 cases (15%) the course of the retromandibular veim was different on the right and left sides of the face in the same cadaver.

N. FACİALİS'İN EKSTRAKRANİAL BÖLÜMÜNÜN MORFOMETRİK İNCELENMESİ

Original Article Doğa- Tr. J. of Medical Sciences, Volume 16, Issue 16, 1992, Pages 825-831

Abstract

This study is conducted to help to reduce the postoperative morbidity rates of the facial nerve during the parotid surgery and to expose the morphometric features of the extracranial portion of the facial nerve. In this study, 26 right (52%), 24 left (48%) hemiface (totally 50 hemiface) were dissected for morphometric investigation of the facial nerve. There was no significant statistical morphometric differences between the two halves of the faces. So, all cases were taken in the same study group. There was a statistically significant relation between the age and the depth of the trunk (r=0.44, t=3.36) The depth of the trunk was found to have a relation considering the distance between the age and the angle of the mandible-bifurcation point (r=0.66, t=6.03, P<0.001). There was no significant relation between the distance of the facial nerve (P>0.05). No significant relation between the distance of the angle of mandible-bifurcation point and other anatomical features of the facial nerve (P>0.05). No significant relation between has been detected between the age and anatomical features of the facial nerve (r=1.64, P>0.05). No significant relation has been detected between the ramification type and facial nerve's other anatomical features (r=1.23, P 0.05)

Özet

Bu çalışma, parotis cerrahisi esnasında n. facialis paralizisine bağlı postoperatif morbiditeyi azaltmaya yardımcı olmak, n. facialis'in ekstrakranial morfometrik özellikleri ile ilgili gösterdiği farklı özellikleri ortaya koymak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışmada 26 (52%) sağ, 24 (48%) sol olmak üzere 50 yarım yüzde n. facialis, ortaya konulup, morfometrik olarak incelendi. N. Facialis'in anatomik özelliklerinin ortalamaları bulundu.

arteria thyroidea ima arising from the brachiocephalic trunk with bilateral absence of inferior thyroid arteries: a case report

Original Article Surg Radiol Anat, Volume 15, Issue 15, 1993, Pages 197-199

Abstract

The anomalous first parts of the left and right subclavian aa. had inferior thyroid aa. in the neck region. The thyroidea ima a. was found to arise from the brachiocephalic trunk, and bifurcated into two branches almost immediately after its origin. These branches ascended in front of the trachea and entered the bases of the right and left lobes of the thyroid gland. The left vertebral a. arose from the aortic arch in the superior mediastinum. The possible existence of this anomaly i important for paratyhroid localization studies, in neck surgery and especially in tracheostomy.

Distrirubition of Facial Nerve in Parotid Gland: Analysis of 50 Cases

Original Article Okajimas Folia Anat, Volume 70, Issue 70, 1994, Pages 295-300

Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to reduce to postoperative morbidity related to facial paralysis during parotid surgery and to layout the different characteristic related to intraparotideal distribution and anatomoses of the facial nerve in our community We also report new variations in the facial nerve branchings that have not been previously published. In this paper, facial nerves from 48 cadavers and 2 patients of which 45(90%), were males and 5 (10%) were females; 26(52%) being right and 24(48%) being left facial nerves were pt forward Their photographs were taken and the diagrams of intraparotideal distributions of each facial nerve were drawn. The intraparotideal configuration of the facial nerve was evaluated in 5 types. Twenty-four% of the facial nerves had no amastomoses (Type I ); 12% had a ring-like shape anastomised between the bucal and the zygomatic braches (Type II); 14% anastomoses were between the bucal snd the other branches in a ring-like shape (Type III); 38% of the facial nerves had multiple complex anastomoses and were named as multiple loops (Type IV); 12% had two main trunks (Type V). Of the bilateral cadaver dissections, the facial nerve distribution in 9(47.3%) were bilaterally the same and in 10(52.7%) main trunks were different. A facial nerve trifurcation composed of two main trunks were also established. There were no statistical differences between branching of the facial nerves in the right and lift side of the faces. It was shown that there were primary nerve anostomoses between the main trunk and the lower trunk in 4 cadavers (8%); also in (12%) cadaver they were between the main and lower trunk and between the upper and lower trunk. This study shows that there are racial differences in the branching of the facial nerve, and it is important to remind the surgeon of the related to the topographic anatomy during the facial surgery.

Morphology of the Retromandibular Vein in Relation to the Facial Nerve in the Parotid Gland

Original Article Acta Anat, Volume 152, Issue 152, 1995, Pages 66-68

Abstract

In order to help avoid complications of parotid surgery, we investigated the relationship between the facial nerve and the retromandibular vein. Fifty dissections were performed on 30 cadavers. In 45 (90%) of the cases the retromandibular vein was located on the medial side of the upper and lower trunks of the facial nerve, and in 5 (10%), the course of the retromandibular vein was lateral to the lower trunks and medial to the upper trunks. These variations were divided into subgroups. The most commonly encountered variation was that the retromandibular vein crossed the facial nerve from the medial (34 cases) or lateral side (3 cases) at a point between the bifurcation and ramification points of the lower facial trunk. In one case, the retromandibular vein was detected on the lateral side of the facial nerve at the bifurcation. In 3 cases (15%), the course of the retromandibular vein was different on the right and left sides of the face in the same cadaver.

The Tensile Bond Strength of Young Permanent Teeth With Shorter Etching Times

Original Article Türk Ontodonti Dergisi, Volume 8, Issue 2, 1995, Pages 243-247

Abstract

Tensile bond strengths of an orthodontic resin cement were compared for 15, 30, 45 or 60 second etching times with a 37% phosphoric acid solution on the enamel surfaces of young permanent teeth. Fourty extracted premolars from 9 to 16 years old children were used for testing. An orthodontic composite resin was used to bond the brackets directly onto the buccal surface of the enamel. The tensile bond strengths were tested with an Instron machine. Bond failure interfaces of barackets bases were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results of tensile bond strengths for 15, 30, 45 or 60 second etching times were not statistically significant. Of the bond failures 50% contained enamel fragments for 45sec. etching time. To achieve good retention, to decrease enamel loss and to reduce moisture contamination in the clinic, as well as to save chairside time, a 15 second etching time suggested for-teenage orthodontic patients.

Three dimensional (3-D) reconsruction of the human coccygeal body

Original Article Morphologie, Volume 86, Issue 274, 2002, Pages 33-35

Abstract

The three dimensional reconstructions of the human coccygeal bodies were undertaken using semi-thin serial sections which were cut from the tissue specimens taken from the ventral parts of the tip of the coccyges of four patients. The coccygeals bodies were observed in the form of convoluted, irregular helical tubes. The diameters of the coccygeal bodies in serial sections were measured and a statistical analysis performed. The lumens of the coccygeal bodies were not observed in the twisted parts of the tissue specimens. Depending upon to the irregular courses of the lumens and their lack of appearances in the twisted areas, we are unable to show the three dimensional reconstructions of the lumens of the coccygeal bodies. In conclusion, this is the first study reporting the three-dimensional reconstruction of the contours of the coccygeal body. These type of the studies, which were done by using serial sections will be very helpful for the understanding of the little known organs of the human body.

Incidence of accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones in the feet: a radiographic study of the Turkish subjects

Original Article Surgical and radiologic anatomy, Volume 31, Issue 31, 2009, Pages 19-24

Abstract

Most accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones of the ankle and the foot remain asymptomatic;however, they have increasingly been examined in the radiology literature, because they can cause painful syndromes or degenerative changes in response to overuse and trauma. Our aim was to document a detailed investigation on the accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones of Turkish subjects in both the feet according to the sex, frequency and division of the bones, coexistence and bilaterility by radiogarphy. A double centered study was performed retrospectively to determine the incidence of he accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones in the ankle and bones (9.6%) were detected by Radiogarphs of 984 subjects. The most common accessory ossicles were accessory navicular (11.7%), os peroneum (4.7%), os trigonum (2.3%), os supranaviculare (1.6%), os vesalianum (0.4%), os supratalare (0.2%), os intermetatarseum(0.2%). We observed bipartite hallux sesamoid in 2.7% of radiographs. Interphalangeal sesamoid bone of the hallux was seen in %2 of radiographs . Incidences of metatarsophalangeal sesamoid bone were found as 0.4% in the second digit, 0.2% third digit, 0.1% fourth digit and 4.3% fifth digit. We also identified the coexistences of two different accessory ossicles as 6% and sesamoid bones as 7% and bipartite sesamoid bones and sesamoid bones as 1.9%. Distrubiton of the most common accessory ossicles in male and female subjects was similar. We reported the incidence of accessory osicles and sesamoid bones of the feet in Turkish adult population.
