The Relationship between Job Satisfaction and Academic Rank: A Study of Academicians in Northern Cyprus

Conference Paper World Conference on Educational Studies / Procedia-Social and Behavioral Sciences,, Volume 1, Issue 1, 2009, Pages 686-691

Abstract

While there has been several studies related to job satisfaction, very few of them have been conducted in higher education. The present work provides empirical evidence to ascertain the implications of academic rank on the job satisfaction of academicians in Northern Cyprus. Data was obtained from 412 academicians. Results indicate that job satisfaction does not progressively increase with academic rank as might be expected. Out of the 20 aspects of the job examined, only 4 aspects, namely advancement, compensation, co-workers, and variety, were statistically significant with academic rank. In general, results indicate the degree of low satisfaction levels that exist among academicians in Northern Cyprus. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Gender and Leadership Behavior in the Hospitality Industry: A Study of Managers in 5-Star Hotels in North Cyprus

Conference Paper International Conference on Management, Applied and Social Sciences (ICMASS'2012) Dubai , Volume -, Issue -, 2012, Pages 368-371

Abstract

Organizations in the hospitality industry are under constant pressure to meet change, develop their structures, and improve performance. Therefore hospitality organizations need to employ effective leadership to improve there overall performance. This study investigates the influence of gender on the leadership behavior of managers in 5-Star hotels in North Cyprus. Leadership behavior was classified according to the leaders’ power and behavior as autocratic, democratic, charismatic, and laissez-faire. The study instrument used was administered personally by the researchers to the hotel managers. Mean and one-way ANOVA analysis was used to analyze the data collected. The results presented are only partial in that the study is still ongoing. The complete study results will enable the researchers to conclude as to whether male and female mangers actually do behave differently in 5-Star hotels in North Cyprus.

The Age and Job Satisfaction Relationship in Higher Education

Conference Paper International Conference on New Horizons in Education (INTE'2012) , Prague, Czech Republic., Volume 55, Issue -, 2012, Pages 1020-1026

Abstract

This study examined the age-job satisfaction relationship in higher education. The study instrument used was the short form Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) which measures overall job satisfaction, intrinsic satisfaction, and extrinsic satisfaction using 20 facets of the job. The instrument was personally administered to the respondents. The population for the study consisted of academics in North Cyprus. The results show that the job satisfaction levels of the older age groups of academics are on the whole higher than the younger age groups. Overall job satisfaction and extrinsic satisfaction do not seem to indicate a linear relationship with age, with overall job satisfaction and extrinsic satisfaction levels varying for different age groups.

Fuzzy Rule Based Approach to Evaluation of Job Satisfaction Performance

Conference Paper ICSCCW – 2015, 03-04 Sept 2015 Antalya Turkey, Volume 8, Issue -, 2015, Pages 207-216

Abstract

In this study we propose a fuzzy rule-based algorithm to evaluate job-satisfaction in an organization. We collected the effective factors/job facets of job satisfaction through interviews. Through analyzing the interview results we compose fuzzy rules. By using the obtained rules, the value of job satisfaction is computed using the expert system shell ESPLAN. The basic advantage of the used approach is being able to operate with imperfect information for the evaluation of job satisfaction by using fuzzy logic

An Evaluation of an Overall Job Satisfaction Performance by using a Fuzzy Expert System

Conference Paper ICSCCW ' 2015, 03-04 Sept 2015, Antalya Turkey., Volume 8, Issue -, 2015, Pages 139-150

Abstract

Job satisfaction has been a popular topic of research for many decades. The interest in this topic has attracted psychologists, management scholars and, more recently, economists. Most of the studies conducted in the area of job satisfaction have been based on statistical methods. However these methods cannot account for the fact that basic facets of job satisfaction, such as Activity, Independence, Variety, Social status, and Supervision- human relations, to name but a few, are evaluated based on perceptions which do not provide precise numeric information. Information supported by perceptions can be processed more adequately by using fuzzy logic. In this paper we suggest fuzzy if-then rules based expert system to describe relations between job factors and overall job satisfaction.

Job Satisfaction: Does Rank make a Difference?

Original Article African Journal of Business Management, Volume 3, Issue 10, 2009, Pages 609-615

Abstract

If low job satisfaction or dissatisfaction exists amongst academics then the goals of higher education cannot be accomplished. The purpose of this study was to provide empirical evidence as to the job satisfaction levels of academics in North Cyprus and to ascertain as to whether academic rank is a reliable predictor of their job satisfaction. The study instrument used was the short-form Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) which measures job satisfaction using 20 facets of the job. The population for this study consisted of academics in North Cyprus. A total of 412 academics (69% response rate) agreed to take part in the study. Data analysis consisted of the computation of descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance ( ANOVA). The findings showed that academics indicate only a moderate level of overall job satisfaction. The job facets advancement, compensation, co-workers and variety were found to be statistically significant with academic rank indicating that academic rank affects the satisfaction associated with 4 out of the 20 facets of the academics' job examined. In general, it can be said that the results of this study indicate the extent of the low to moderate satisfaction levels that exists among academics in North Cyprus.

Institutional Isomorphism between TRNC and Turkey for e-Government Strategy: What Encourages Spontaneous Isomorphism?

Original Article International Journal of eBusiness and eGovernment Studies, Volume 3, Issue 1, 2011, Pages 121-132

Abstract

This study aims at reviewing the TRNC e-government studies by considering Turkey’s e-government best practices based on the institutional isomorphism theory with its three mechanisms, namely coercive isomorphism, mimetic processes, and normative pressures. Turkey has a lot of experience with the best practices and their successful application on e-government projects, especially legal issues, technological systems, local and governmental authorities, etc. Thus, the TRNC should make use of this opportunity by utilizing these practices and making its own strategic plan based on the national information policy. The requirements and adaptability points of e-government issues between the countries will be discussed here. Consequently, neither mimetic, normative isomorphism, nor coercive isomorphism is enough to be modeled by the TRNC egovernment efforts. Instead, the concept of ‘spontaneous isomorphism’ was created in the study and discussed as an alternative institutional isomorphism between the TRNC and Turkey based on the Best Practices e-Government Models.

Original Article African Journal of Business Management , Volume 5, Issue 15, 2011, Pages 6247-6255

Abstract

This study has provided empirical evidence related to the activity of female entrepreneurs in North Cyprus, in particular, concentrating on their personal profile, characteristics of their business, the motivation behind their choice of becoming a business owner, and their measures of business success. The study instrument used to collect primary data from the respondents was a four-part cross-sectional structured qualitative questionnaire personally administered by the authors. A total of 291 female business owners were randomly selected and approached with 176 agreeing to take part in the study, giving a response rate of 61%. Results indicate that the typical Turkish Cypriot female entrepreneur is aged between 35 and 44 years, is married, has 2 children, and is a high-school graduate. She is active in retail trade, and has no prior work experience. Her motivation for engaging in entrepreneurial activity is because of her desire for independence and to earn an income, with profits/sales and growth/expansion being her measures of business success.

The Organizational Citizenship Behaviour of Academic Staff in North Cyprus

Original Article Procedia Economics and Finance / Elsevier, Volume 2016, Issue 39, 2016, Pages 701–704

Abstract

Due to its contribution to the effective functioning of organizations the topic of Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) has gained much attention over the past years and has been studied in a diversity of settings. The purpose of this study was to examine OCB in the higher education sector. More specifically, the study investigated the degree of OCB that exists amongst the academic staff at a private university in North Cyprus. The study instrument utilized was the “Organizational Citizenship Behaviour Scale” developed by Podsakoff et al. (1990) which is the most widely used OCB study instrument in the literature. The 24 item scale measures the five subscales/dimensions of OCB, namely altruism, conscientiousness, sportsmanship, courtesy, and civic virtue. The average of all 24 items calculates overall OCB. The study results indicate that OCB does exist amongst the academic staff at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences; however the results are only partial in that the study is still ongoing. The complete study results will enable the researcher to conclude whether academic staff from different faculties indicates different levels of OCB.

Approximate Reasoning on a Basis of Z-number valued If-Then Rules

Original Article IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, Volume Early View, Issue 99, 2016, Pages 1

Abstract

Approximate reasoning is about reasoning with imperfect information. Nowadays, a large diversity of approaches to approximate reasoning with fuzzy information and fuzzy type- 2 information exists. It should be stressed, however, that realworld imperfect information is characterized by combination of fuzzy and probabilistic uncertainties which is referred to as bimodal information. In view of this, Zadeh introduced the concept of a Z-number regarded as an ordered pair Z=(A,B) of fuzzy numbers A and B, where A is a linguistic value of a variable of interest, and B is a linguistic value of probability measure of A, playing a role of its reliability. Unfortunately, up to day there is no research on approximate reasoning realized on the basis of If-Then rules with Z-number valued antecedents and consequents, briefly, Z-rules. Zadeh addressed this problem as related to an uncharted territory. In this paper, a new approach is developed to study approximate reasoning with Z-rules on a basis of linear interpolation. We provide an application of the approach to job satisfaction evaluation and to students’ educational achievement evaluation problems related to psychological and perceptual issues naturally characterized by imperfect information. The obtained results show applicability and validity of the proposed approach.
