Software Standards in Developing Virtual Laboratories for Engineering Education

Abstract

Nowadays, virtual laboratories play a crucial role in e-learning education systems. The use of these types of technologies in engineering education presents new opportunities for instructors and learners alike to obtain tangible results and improve their subject knowledge. These results are reached without the need to face challenges such as a dearth of instruments, time, space, assistance (human resource) and so on. Furthermore, virtual laboratories could overcome obstacles such as unexpected and unsafe results common to real laboratories. This book describes the necessary steps involved in the development and design phases of virtual laboratories. Furthermore, the authors explain how to achieve the desired interfaces by using Human Computer Interaction design standards and Multimedia Learning Principles. The present book will offer valuable guidelines for researchers and students keen on developing virtual laboratories

Abstract

One of the most rapidly developing areas in the information and communications field is the internet web applications, with recent interactive web applications heavily influencing educational techniques such as distance learning or internet-based educational platforms. Laboratory courses are a major component of the world of Engineering and Science education. The main goal of virtual laboratories is to prepare an interactive platform for educational professionals, researchers and learners of all kind who study and investigate in dangerous and limited environments, using expensive equipment. Also, combining theory with practice necessitates laboratorial experiments plays a main role in Science and Engineering students’ educational life. Virtual laboratory (V-lab) making it possible for learners to gain experience. V-lab is one such platform where users are able to use the internet with animation or 3D interfaces. This could replace expensive, complicated real and dangerous labs in educational systems. In the paper, V-lab’s main components and design types are explained. Then the developed V-lab’s parts and explained system’s Use-Case modeling design in detail.

Abstract

The increase in the rate of production of new technologies encourages students keen on technology to enroll in Egineering courses. Therefore, the number of Engineering students is constantly growing. Engineering education provides a platform which could tackle ever-fluctuating changes in technology via designing various training ways, such as virtual environments or interactive learning platforms. A new generation of these types of systems is more focus on the technical features more than learning efficiency and usability. Human-Computer Interaction theories and methodologies by emphasizing on interaction between students and systems provide a platform to make reliable and intuitive interaction ways. In order to evaluate these interaction qualities HCI present the solutions to do usability testing. This paper presents, how can overcome the traditional e-learning system problems by using HCI.

Security of the Internet of Things: An Overview

Abstract

Over the last several decades, the pace of progress of Internet technology has undergone rapid developments, especially in the Internet of Things (IoT). The recent advancements that have changed the way people live are called Smart devices, which are capable of contacting each other wherever and whenever. This technology has become an inseparable element for people in modern society and industrial operations; therefore, providing a secure data sharing environment and storage framework are essential. This current study presents a survey on the security issues surrounding the IoT. Generally, the IoT includes three main architecture layers, namely the Network layer, Application layer and Perception layer. In order to achieve a reliable and secure IoT environment, a number of privacy principles and security protocols should be implemented for each construction layer individually. The aim of this paper is to explore the security issues of the IoT technology and investigate the problems for a safe, secure and reliable operation.

HCI STANDARDS FOR DEVELOPING MOBILE LEARNING APPLICATIONS IN EDUCATION

Abstract

In recent decades, smartphones have become an inseparable part of people’s daily lives, particularly among younger generations. Education, business, and marketing are some of the fields that now widely utilize smartphone platforms and applications. In the past several years, education has also been significantly influenced by the smartphone. In this regard, mobile learning (ML) and ubiquitous learning (UL) have emerged as important learning modes. ML and UL are capable of utilizing smartphone devices to run specific learning applications or mobile tools. Appropriate interaction between the instructor and the learner is one of the vital parts of pedagogy. However, the user interface design is one of the main challenges to mobile application developers. Standards for proper interactions between mobile devices and users are detailed in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) standards or Mobile HCI. Furthermore, Mobile HCI has been determined to be a more effective tool for usability testing in order to achieve acceptable mobile application results. The current study theoretically explains the importance of HCI in education and describes how HCI could be used to enhance the interactions between mobile devices and learners in both ML and UL environments. The authors anticipate that this paper will be beneficial for researchers and mobile application developers by considering the impact of HCI in the success of mobile applications.

Abstract

Over the last decades, the pace of progress in technology has been rapid, especially in the information communication technologies. The recent advances which have changed the way people live is the smartphone. It has become an inseparable element of people’s lives in modern society, in particular young people’s daily lives. A smartphone is not solely a cell phone, it is also a computer, MP3 player, Video player, Notebook, etc. In North Cyprus, there has not been a study to determine university students’ smartphones usage status. For this reason, the main purpose of the study was to redress this lack. 318 students attended the study. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Mann Whitney-U, Anova, frequently and percentage were used during the analysis process. The results showed that the students spend much more time using a smartphone. However, their academic performance and social interactions have not been affected.

A hybrid KNN-SVM model for Iranian license plate recognition

Abstract

This study presents a new method for Iranian License plate recognition systems that will increase the accuracy and decrease the costs of the recognition phase of these systems. In this regard, ahybrid of the k-Nearest Neighbors algorithmand the Multi-Class Support Vector Machines (KNN-SVM) model was developedin the study. K-NN was used as the first classification model as it is simple, robust against noisy data set and effective fora large data set. The confusion among the license plate similar characters problem was overcome by using the multiple SVMs classification model. The SVMs model has improved the performance of the K-NN in the recognition of similar characters. The current study experimental results revealed that there is a significant improvement in the character recognition phase rate compared with a similar study.

Usability evaluation for Near East University student information system

Abstract

By increasing the number of young people who choose the academic way for their lives, large-scale universities faced with information administration challenges. Student Information System (SIS) is one of the solutions in order to provide management facilities for educational and financial approaches. SIS is accessed and used by the university students, all levels of academic staff and university stakeholders. Determining the usability level of the SIS in a Human Computer Interaction perspective is an important consideration for the universities. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the usability of the Near East University (NEU) SIS by using ISO/IEC 9126 standards. ISO/IEC 9126 model has the most suitable metrics for evaluating the internal usability of the systems. The result of this study will be helpful for NEU SIS developer team, in order to consider the improvement possibilities for the next version of the system.
