Abstract

ABSTRACT Educational technology has been gaining importance in English language teaching since with the help of technological tools teaching and learning became more effective. This study which is descriptive in nature, is designed to investigate the present attitudes of ELT students towards the Internet in doing homework, their technological literacy and the level their instructors use technological tools in their classes. The participants of this study are prospective teachers who are studying in ELT department at the Near East University. Investigation shows that they resort to the Internet mostly whilst doing homework, they have good computer skills and they have positive attitudes towards technology. (Contains 2 tables.)

Abstract

Abstract The motive behind the study is to find out more about reflective teaching practices among teachers in a tertiary education context. The research investigates the awareness and application of reflective practices by a group of ESL teachers. The paper also shows the strategies and skills the participants use to reflect. In addition, the variables of gender, experience and level of education are discussed in relation to reflective teaching. A questionnaire was designed by the researchers to collect the necessary data from the participants. The reliability coefficient of the questionnaire is (Alpha = 0.8602). The participants in this study consisted of 9 male and 51 female teachers of English at the English Preparatory School in one of the universities (n = 60). 26 of the participants are holders of BA degrees and the other 34 teachers have the MA degree. The participants’ experience in teaching ranges between 1 to 20 years of experience in ELT. The results show that gender, experience and level of education do not play a role in teacher’s reflection. In addition, awareness of the theory or the importance of reflection in teachers’ professional growth does not necessarily mean that teachers apply reflection in their teaching experience. Moreover, teachers were found to make decisions based on context evaluation while teaching. However, the participants do not follow up by reflecting on their actions and assessing the effectiveness of the decision they had made in the classroom. The paper ends with recommendations to enhance the position of reflective practice in language teaching.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to analyse emotional intelligence level of teachers employed in secondary schools of the TRNC. The sample of the study comprises 253 teachers. The findings of the study showed that there was a significant difference in teachers’ perceptions on performance management in terms of gender and seniority. The study also revealed that there was no significant difference in teachers’ perceptions on both performance management and emotional intelligence in terms of age. Significant difference was found in teachers’ perceptions on both performance management and emotional intelligence in terms of school type. Besides, there was a correlation between total performance management and two subdimensions of emotional intelligence: self-motivation and empathy and adaptation of change

Evaluation of performance management in state schools: A case of North Cyprus

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The research study aims to evaluate performance management in the state secondary schools in North Cyprus. This study is significant by shedding a light on perceptions of teachers and headmasters regarding quality control of schools through performance management. In this research, quantitative research was employed, and a survey was conducted to gather quantitative data through questionnaires. Quantitative data were analysed and interpreted through SPSS program based on ANOVA. 16 head teachers and 237 teachers from 11 state secondary schools participated in the research. The findings revealed that teachers and headmasters gained insights on performance management and its dimensions. In this research, the significant difference between work experience of teachers and headmasters and the dimensions of performance management was revealed. In other words, there is a significant difference between work experience and the dimensions of performance management which are the planning of individual performance goals, reflection on observation reports, performance measurement, reward-punishment and the relationship between individual performance and the culture of the organization.

Socio-linguistic Competence of Turkish and Turkish Cypriot English as a Foreign Language Learners in the English Speech Act of Apology

Abstract

ABSTRACT Apologies are formulated when social norms are violated. The objective of this paper is to analyze the interlanguage and socio-pragmatic features of Turkish and Turkish Cypriot English as a foreign language (EFL) for learners in the speech act of apology.The interlanguage variability in the realization patterns of apologies is identified with special emphasis on the comparison between the usages of strategy types.Based on the analysis of the data gathered through a written discourse completion task, the results have revealed that the most frequently employed semantic formulae for the speech act of apology in English for all the groups are expressing regret followed by explanation and offer of repair. It is concluded that although the three groups have employed similar strategy types in apologizing, they have differed in the frequency of these strategies and that in some situations the realization patterns of apologies are influenced by the first language cultural norms.
