Nezihe Tekman became a member of the Faculty of Law, International Law Department at the University in February 2017. She currently teaches Private International Law and has previously taught in Cyprus and in different institutions in the United Kingdom. She holds an LL.M degree from the University of Bristol (UK) in Commercial Law with the thesis of the notion of the consumer under European Contract Law. Nezihe is a qualified lawyer and got appointed to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Bar Association in 2011. Nezihe is currently in the process of completing her Doctoral Research (Ph.D.) at the University of Hull in United Kingdom supervised by world renowned leading scholar Prof. Christian Twigg-Flesner within the field of European Consumer Law focusing on consumer vulnerabilities in the European Union. Her research covers multi-disciplinary spanning from International to European Consumer Law and she is a fellow of the International Association of Consumer Law (IACL). She is also affiliated to and holds Advanced Research Certificates from legal research networks of LexisNexis and Westlaw UK. She has presented her research across Europe (the Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom) and has been invited to present her research in Brazil in the International Association of Consumer Law that is held every two years in different continents and she has also been invited publish in Brazilian Consumer Law Journal under the database of Thomson Reuters. Nezihe is particularly interested in collaborating her academic research and social environment in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. She holds multiple qualifications including ‘University Teaching for Postgraduate Researchers Programme’ in 2014 enabling her to combine theory and practice in higher education along with technology led teaching, Nezihe convenes an informal network on critical consumer law and remains active in policy and law reform debates related to consumer law throughout the EU and Cyprus. The course aims to introduce students with the European Union, its evolution, institutions, founding principles and the areas of functioning. Apart from the historical development of the organization, it is essential to understand the relationship between EU and national dimensions. To achieve this aim, an introduction in the core institutional structures of the EU will be provided, inter alia, the European Commission, the European Council, the Council of the European Union and the Court of Justice of the European Union. This course shall enable students to: 1. Understand the historical evolution of the Union from legal, political and economic aspects; 2. Assess the constitutional value of various treaties throughout the historical evolution of the EU; 3. Distinguish between widening versus deepening of the Union; 4. Explain the membership criteria of the EU and apply the knowledge to different states; 5. Comprehend the institutional structure of the Union: which are the central institutions in EU’s decision-making, what is their role and mutual interrelatedness, and how they are related to member states; 6. Understand the role of the Court of Justice of the EU as the supranational judicial body of the EU; 7. Outline a number of areas of activity of the EU with a specific focus on internal market and monetary union; 8. Critically assess current policies of the EU from different perspectives and apply the knowledge acquired during the course.
