Abstract

The development of collaborative studies in learning has led to a renewed interest in the field of web-based education. This book describes the development of a highly interactive and collaborative virtual teaching environment by supporting the Moodle together with two types of collaborative learning tools to create a virtual learning environment to teach programming languages. The main aim of this book was to find out the effectiveness of an ACLT during the teaching of programming languages in a web-based environment. The NEU-VLE system has been developed for this purpose. The important results of this book are that students using the ACLT have shown the highest statistically significant success rates, and the results of the experimental book ave shown that an LMS can be made more efficient if it is enhanced by an ACLT. In addition, students? opinions were the highest when using an ACLT in teaching programming languages in a web-based environment. The results of this book add empirical data to the relevant field, and are expected to help educational technologist, online administrators, instructional and technical support staff, and software tool developers.

The traditional classroom based teaching and learning is changing with the advances in the internet technology. Nowadays many colleges and universities are offering distant learning sourses. Such courses are well suited to individuals who cannot attent to classes because of their work or family commitments. In order to carry out effective and efficient distant teaching courses it is necessary to use Learning Management Systems (LMS). These are software packages which are available as either Open Source, or commercially. This book is about LMS systems and their use in distant education. Abstract

Learning Management Systems plays an important role among the existing learning methods for the individuals to learn ubiquously, effectively, and independent of time. The open source ones are very attractive to educational establishments since their costs are relatively low. The opinions of students who establish one of the important elements of education is very important for this system. This research has been prepared in order to find out the opinions of students using the open source Moodle learning management system. The students have carried out learning their class topics using the Moodle LMS during one semestre. The research was carried out with 73 students who registered to “Learning Management Systems” course in the Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology. In order to find out the opinios of students who participated in this study, the 2 dimensions “Usage Results” and “Perceived Effects on Learning” of the survey entitled “The Effect of Aim-Technology Fit from the Point of Larning Management Systems”, written by van Raaij and Schepes (2008) was used. The data was processed using SPSS 17.0 software package and results were given based on arithmetic average, standard deviation, and t-test analysis were carried out. At the end of this study, it was found that students learned independent of time and place by using Moodle, and they all agreed that the distant learning courses should be based on Moodle. It is also believed that the results of this study should be helpful to all instructors who wish to create distant learning courses, and also to all students who wish to follow these courses remotely.

Bireylerin zamandan ve mekandan bağımsız, etkili bir şekilde her yerden öğrenimlerini gerçekleştirmesi için varolan seçenekler arasında öğretim yönetim sistemleri (ÖYS) önemli yer teşkil etmektedir. Açık kaynak kodlu olanları, maliyeti düşürdüğünden kullanımları eğitim kurumlarına oldukca cazip gelmektedir. Eğitimin üç faktöründen biri olan öğrencilerin de bu sistemlere karşı görüşlerinin belirlenmesi önem arz etmektedir. Bu nedenle, araştırmada öğrencilerin Moodle açık kaynak kodlu öğretim yönetim sistemine yönelik görüşlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Uygulamaya dayalı yapılan araştırmada öğrenciler Moodle ÖYS’ni kullanarak öğretim aktivitelerini bir dönem bayunca sürdürmüşlerdir. Araştırmanın örneklemini Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi Bilgisayar ve Öğretim Teknolojileri Eğitimi Bölümü müfredatında yer alan “Öğretim Yönetim Sistemleri” dersine kayıt yaptıran 73 öğrenci oluşturmuştur. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin öğretim yönetim sistemlerine yönelik düşüncelerini belirlemek amacıyla van Raaij ve Schepers (2008)’in geliştirdiği “Amaç-teknoloji uyumunun öğretim yönetim sistemi açısından etkisi” isimli anketlerinin “Kullanım Sonuçları” ve “Öğrenme Üzerine Algılanan Etkinleri” isimli 2 buyutu kullanılmıştır. Veriler SPSS 17.0 paket programı kullanılarak aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma ve t-testi analizleri yapılarak yorumlanmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda öğrencilerin, Moodle ÖYS kullanımının zaman ve mekandan bağımsız öğrenme ortamları oluşturduğu, arayüz tasarımı sayesinde kullananlara kullanım kolaylığı sağladığı ve tüm derslerin uzaktan eğitim uygulamalarında kullanılması gerektiği yönünde olumlu görüş belirttikleri saptanmıştır. Araştırmanın uzaktan eğitim yapmak isteyen tüm eğitmenlere ve uzaktan eğitim almak isteyen tüm öğrencilere katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.

The role of mobile game-based learning in expediting the process of learning English language

In recent years the information technology has developed rapidly especially in learning English language through mobile application. The more students learn vocabularies the more they will be confident, able to concentrate on listening and fluent in speaking. Students in countries which have English as a foreign language or English as a second language, have difficulty building up vocabularies. Mobile application-based English language learning came to existence to motivate the learner memorizing vocabularies easily particularly the applications which are incorporated with motivated features such as a good design, an appropriate model and game-based learning. Moreover, the mobile applications are employed for presenting the learning contexts (curriculums) to be available with no restriction on time and space. The aim of this paper is to show; with the effect of new technology; how the mobile game-based English language learning will increase students’ motivation, positively affect the language learning and expedite the learning process until the learning goal is achieved.

Virtual laboratories provide an alternative to real laboratories and they provide many advantages compared to real laboratories. Tourists need guide books and maps to navigate through a new location. This can be a blessing and a curse. Though the information obtained from maps and guide books can be very helpful, it can also be very bulky and confusing, but with the rise of GPS-based mobile application, information has become more portable, synthesized and user-friendly. However several social behaviours in many fields have been heavily modified in the last decade, due to the growth of the Internet and its users. Although there is a rise in mobile application development for tourists, most of the mobile systems are yet to handle certain issues like; tourists’ information management, accessibility by tourists and the technical know-how of this applications. This paper reviews the various benefits of these applications to the economy and to the tourists. It also looked at the various limitations that may arise or in existence and possible solutions to resolve these difficulties.

In such regions, whenever dangers are foreseen during events like elections, schools must be closed no matter how long it might take. Fortunately, vast majority of students are addicted to social networks though rarely for educational purposes. This paper explored the recent techniques via which social media will be patronized to achieve the best educational practice while restricting students and teachers to their homes during fear. Abstract

Smartphones have changed people’s lives. It has become an inseparable part of young people’s lives. The widespread usage of smartphones has provided a modern platform of a unique lifestyle when it comes to education, business, the environment, etc. During the last few years, one of the greatest effects of the Smartphone was in the education sector. Mobile learning or m-learning is a learning mode, which uses the device to run specific learning tools or mobile applications. Interaction between the instructor (teacher or application) and the learner is one of the important parts of pedagogy. In addition, one of the main challenges for designing mobile applications is the user interface. A standard user interface is needed to facilitate proper interactions between the user and the mobile device. In order to achieve acceptable mobile application results, such as other applications, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) standards, particularly Mobile HCI, has been found as a better tool for usability testing. We hope that this paper will be useful for mobile application developers, particularly mobile learning applications as well as researchers when considering the serious impact of HCI in the success of the mobile application. This paper theoretically explains the importance of HCI in education, and describes how HCI might be used to enhance interactions between learners and mobile devices.

Optimizing video streaming: focus on wireless mesh networks

The demand for video streaming services is rapidly increasing due to advancements in technology such as e-learning, video enabled social media networks, e-news as well as an increase in the usage of mobile devices. Most users are now watching movies and news on mobile devices streaming videos directly from the cloud. However, this is creating technical challenges to network service providers when wireless radio channels experience high data rates and low latency for video transmissions. Such technical problems are resulting in video packet loss, signal loss and poor quality when streaming videos. With users expecting high picture quality, audible sound quality, minimized congestion and a smooth flow of video streams this paper provides an overview of different techniques for optimizing video streaming in mesh-networks, focused on path determination, adaptive quality, and cross layer optimization techniques. This subject has not been researched in detail therefore there is a missing gap in the literature. We hope that this paper will fill the gap ın the literature in order to find best strategies to implement when streaming video across wireless mesh networks so as to minimize technical setbacks being experienced.

Motives behind preference of Internet communication tools among university students

Abstract

Researches on internet communication tool (ICT) patronage among university students are of paramount importance owing to the fact that ICT enriched students with communication skills and prepare them for future jobs as communication accounts for the major time spent at work by managers. The aim of the study is to determine factors that effect university students’ preference while choosing ICT. This research was conducted at Near East University, Cyprus during 2015 spring semester. 99 students voluntarily responded to the questionnaire that was developed by the authors. The data collected was analyzed based on mean, frequency, percentage and one-sample t-test techniques. It was found that students’ perceived compatibility and data transfer, audience influence, cost of services and ease of use due to style of an application, are the key factors toward preference of one ICT over another. To make this research significant to future studies, the finding was discussed in-line with previous researches.

Abstract

The importance of Education Technology is rapidly increasing as time passes. Studies also made within this field show parallel increase too. It has been put forward that, the importance which has been aroused effects the amount of service quality offered. The aim of this study is to evaluate the services which are offered that creates an effective learning environment. The libraries were evaluated according to catalogue search, website, hardware, staff, materials, needs of library, achieve to materials, directions and opening hours of libraries. “The quality of the offered service at the libraries” was the collective data tool. The data set includes users from university libraries and Atatürk Culture Center Library. Collected data was analyzed with SPSS 14 and the necessary statistical calculations were made and data’s were presented.

Eğitim teknolojisinin önemi gün geçtikce artmaktadır. Bu alanda yapılan çalışmalarında buna paralel olarak arttığı görülmektedir. Artan önem hizmet kalitesinin etkin şekilde ölçülmesi gerekliliğini ortaya çıkarmıştır. Bu araştırmanın amacı kütüphanelerin bir öğrenme ortamı olarak öğrenenlere sunduğu hizmetlerin değerlendirilmesidir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda kütüphaneler Katalog Tarama, Web Sitesi, Mevcut Donanımlar, Personel ve Materyaller açısından incelenmiştir. Araştırma genel tarama modeline göre yürütülmüştür. Veri toplama aracı olarak “Kütüphanalerin öğrenenlere sunduğu hizmetin kalitesi” veri toplama aracı kullanılmıştır. Örneklem olarak Kuzey Kıbrıs’taki üniversite kütüphanaleri ve Lefkoşa’da bulunan AKM Kütüphanesi kullanıcılarına uygulanmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen veriler SPSS 14.0 paket programı ile analiz edilmiş ve gerekli istatistiksel işlemler yapılarak bulgular sunulmuştur.

Abstract

The development of collaborative studies in learning has led to a renewed interest in the field of Web-based education. In this experimental study a highly interactive and collaborative virtual teaching environment has been created by supporting Moodle LMS with collaborative learning tool GREWPtool. The aim of this experimental study has been to find out the success rate of students when using an advanced and a standard collaborative tool in teaching programming languages over the Internet. The system has been tested with a total of 58 students whose aim was to learn the programming language Java. Success rate of students have been measured using two different assessments. Our results show a higher success rate when an LMS system is combined with an advanced collaborative tool during the teaching of programming languages in a Web-based environment.

Learning management systems (LMSs) are software applications that comprise a suite of tools for learning and online teaching. There are many commercial and open source LMSs that can be found on the web. Because there are many LMS systems in the market place, one of the problems facing a user is how to choose a system that can meet the requirements. This paper is about a computer program developed at the Near East University for the evaluation of learning management systems. The developed system, named EW-LMS, is web-based and can easily be used over the internet anywhere and at any time. The system provides a web-based decision support system that may help administrators and instructors to choose the most suitable LMS system for their needs and requirements. This evaluation system was designed using the MSVisual Studio .NET together with a MS-SQL Server based database.

Improving critical thinking skills in mobile learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of mobile learning over the critical thinking skills. The volunteer sample this experimental study consisted of 41 undergraduates enrolled in computer education classes at the Near East University in North Cyprus. The students’ critical thinking disposition was measured by California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory cale (CCTDI). Also, the usefulness of mobile learning systems (UMLS), a questionnaire adapted by Motiwalla (2007), was used to collect data. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis techniques; arithmetic mean and standard eviation. Overall, students’ attitudes toward the usefulness of a mobile learning system improved significantly at the end of the experimental study. It was found that after the study the students’ creativity improved significantly. Furthermore, researchers found that outdoor experiences influenced students’ attitudes positively. Additionally, results indicate that in this study, working collaboratively and sharing information were built into a group activity.

The aim of this study is to investigate the free e-mail usage of students in the technology departments of the university, and also to learn which free e-mail service the participants prefer. The volunteer participants in this study consisted of 150 undergraduate students attending the Near East University in Northern Cyprus. 50 students from Department of computer Information Systems (CIS), 50 students from Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technologies (CEIT), and 50 students from Department of Computer Engineering (COM.ENG). Data were collected using questionnaire. SPSS 16.0 was used to analyzed and interpret the collected data. Anova, frequency and percentage methods were used during the analysis process. According to the results indicate that it can be seen that a large majority of the students use the e-mail services and the majority of them chose to use the Hotmail.

Mobile learning or m-learning, a relatively new concept, has attracted the interest of educators, researchers, and companies developing learning systems and instructional materials. This study investigated the use of integrating use of mobile technologies, data services, and multimedia messaging systems to increase students’ use of mobile technologies and to develop environmental awareness. Data was collected using “usefulness of mobile learning systems” questionnaire from a sample consisting of 20 male and 21 female undergraduates enrolled in computer education and instructional technologies classes at the Near East University in North Cyprus. Students voluntarily participated in a six-week program using mobile telephones to transmit photographs of local environmental blights and to exchange pictures and observations. Participants learned ways to maintain clean environments and increased their awareness of environmental concerns. Responses on questionnaire differed significantly based upon gender and grade.

There is an increase use of wireless technologies in education all over the world. In fact, wireless technologies such as laptop computers, palmtop computers, and mobile phones are revolutionising education and transforming the traditional classroom based learning and teaching into anytime and anywhere education. This paper investigates the use of wireless technologies in education with particular reference to the potential of learning new technical English Language words using SMS text messaging. The system, developed by the authors, called Mobile Learning Tool (MOLT), has been tested with 45 first-year undergraduate students. The knowledge of students before and after the experiment has been measured. Our results show that students enjoyed and learned new words with the help of their mobile phones. We believe that using the MOLT system as an educational tool will contribute to the success of students.

The purpose of this study is to find out the opinions of instructors on mobile learning. This study has been carried out at the Near East University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, during the Fall 2009 semester. Participants in this study consisted of 40 instructors. In the research, in addition to the information obtained through literature search, a survey was carried out to learn the opinions of teachers on mobile learning. Data were collected using a questionnaire. After that SPSS 16.0 was used to analyze and interpret the collected data. Anova, frequency, paired sampled t-test and percentage methods were used during the analysis process. Technological developments have affected teachers’ instructional techniques: technology has allowed the concept of education to be viewed from different perspectives. The aim of this research is to integrate Web 2.0 tools, which are sparsely found on the internet (each tool is on a different site), into education and see if it positively affects learning; also, students’ opinions about this formed environment will be sought. The study sample consists of 55 students, from whom data was collected. Descriptive statistics were calculated and a paired sample t-test was used, in order to compare pre-experience test and postexperience test means. The univariate of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare group means. Positive opinions of students show that the use of the WLS environment within Web 2.0 tools brings a new dimension to distance learning. This paper is orientated towards anyone interested in social networks and Web 2.0 tools and individuals who may be interested in this includes teachers, instructors, students and educational organisations, such as universities and schools. The usage of social network sites is increasing daily. Facebook, which is a popular social network site, is one of the most commonly used social sharing sites today, having millions of users. The aim of this study was to investigate the Facebook usage of students and also to learn which Facebook tools the participants preferred. Eighty six volunteer undergraduate students participated in the present study. The data obtained by the survey was analyzed and commented upon using the SPSS program with the percentage, frequency, and mean statistical analysis techniques. As the results show, students spend a significant amount of their times using the Facebook. Participants use Messages, Chat, Friends, Links, News and Photos tools are the most commonly used tools of Facebook. In addition, Facebook provides individuals with a way of maintaining and strengthening social ties, which can be beneficial in both social and academic settings. Future studies should concentrate on integrating the Facebook into education and teaching, which is important in students’ everyday working lives.

It is necessary that the elements of mobile learning are organized correctly and the interactions between the various elements are combined in an efficient and optimum way so that the mobile learning is successful and the implementation is efficient. In addition, the characteristics of mobile learning should be organized, and the way they are applied to mobile learning activities and the application methods and the duration of the application time should be planned well in advance. Consequently, a deeper insight into theory-based research is required to better understand the underlying motivations that lead academics to adopting mobile learning elements and characteristics. Twitter has a potential to be used as a professional and social networking since individuals who have similar interests can meet on Twitter. Twitter is a multiplatform Web 2.0, part social networking - part microblogging tool, freely accessibly on the Web. The aim of this study was to investigate the usage habits of undergraduate students on Twitter. The study was conducted on ninety three volunteered undergraduate students. The data obtained by the survey was analyzed and commented upon using the SPSS program with the percentage, frequency, and mean statistical analysis techniques. As the results show, majority of the participants, spent most of their time on Twitter. Quotes, photos, videos, music, news, IT news and magazine news are the most commonly shared items on Twitter. However, educational materials were observed to be least frequently shared by the students. From this premise, we argue that investigating the most preferred usage habits of students on Twitter is an important and hot topic research. We believe that in future days more research will be focused on usage of Twitter in education due to its characteristics and student’s interest in this social network. Therefore, this study could be considered as an important preliminary study in this field.

Segmentation and creating usage profiles for students would improve the performance and effectiveness of designing and organizing the e-learning platforms. A major contribution of this study is that it leads to comparing the differences among individuals (age, department and nationality), analysing the amount of time spent on Facebook, and realizing individual preferences in Facebook usage among university students. Participants in this study consisted of 173 volunteer undergraduate students. The sample was selected by the method of random sampling. The data collection form titled “Students’ Facebook Usage” was prepared by the authors. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, and crosstabulation analysis for comparative analyses were used to analyze and interpret the data. The main results of the study indicate that same of the students check their Facebook account once a day and most of the students spend only 0-1 hours each day on Facebook. Another important finding of the study is that there are no statistically significant differences among individuals according to nationalities, departments and ages towards time spent on Facebook. As for the purposes of checking their Facebook account, most of the participants log on to Facebook to specify their location and to check in to see where their friends are at that time.

In other words, they are able to engage with multiple sources of information at the same time. But traditional teaching methods are not enough to keep them occupied, so it is necessity in order to ensure Web 2.0 learning tools and mobile applications in the education arena. The main aim of this study is to determine the usage of mobile applications among university students. 144 voluntary university students attended the study. Data was collected by questionnaire and descriptive statistics, paired t-test, frequency, and percentage methods were used. The results of the research showed that students frequently use Whatsapp, Facebook, and YouTube through other mobile applications.

Abstract

The technology has been advancing rapidly recently and it has become necessary to use technology in the education sector. Because of this it has become necessary to re-organize the education sector. The needs of both students and teachers are also changing. Teachers need to prepare their lecture notes in the most effective way and in the shortest time. For the students the requirement has been to remove the time and space concept and encourage them for self-study. The educational institutions on the other hand are seeking to provide the maximum level of education with minimum level of investment. LMS seems to be at the top of the latest technological advancements that will satisfy all the requirements of teachers and students. The author has prepared this paper with the aim of giving general information about LMS systems, and in addition to describe all the aspects of LMS systems such as their general structure, types, and so on. In particular, the highly popular Moodle LMS system is described in greater detail.

An assessment of the effects of widespread use of mobile applications in the health sector: An exploratory study of its success and failures

Abstract

Prior to the introduction of mobile technologies, the manual system of checking patients’ vital signs after approximately seven hours increased the health risk of the patients. Some of the patients’ health was jeopardised, worsening their situation, others re-admitted and others even passing on. The introduction and extensive use of mobile technologies has transformed the delivery of health care. Mobile applications with early warning systems are now dominating the health sector in an attempt to alert medical practitioners to act promptly to the patients’ needs. This paper reviews effects of mobile applications in the health sector as well as the success and failures of Mobile health applications. The assimilation of mobile applications in health care is marking an incredible venture in the health care industry.
