A Research Study About "e-Learning Training Needs" of Vocational High School Teachers in North Cyprus

Conference Paper Proceedings of 7th European Conference on e-Learning, Volume 2, Issue 1, 2008, Pages 590-598

Abstract

Day by day, the e-learning divides between teachers become somewhat more obvious and more important. The teachers, who are e-literate, are starting to prove themselves to be more effective than the others. On the other hand, the vocational high school teachers in North Cyprus, also, face a challenge of updating their knowledge to make appropriate use of the e-teaching methods in their classes. Hence, it was a presumption that the teacher training activities should be delivered to these schools. Of course, to reveal this fact, a research study is done. The purpose of this research is to determine the e-learning training needs of the vocational high school teachers, in North Cyprus. A questionnaire consisting of 32 items was developed by the researchers; the validity and reliability of it is checked. According to the expert views, the questionnaire is divided into 3 factors: Technology-based e-learning applications; web-based e-learning applications and administrative e-learning applications subjects. In North Cyprus, there are 12 vocational high schools and there are about 490 teachers in these schools. The number of the filled questionnaires used in this research is 398. The following are the scales used in the questionnaire: Excellent, quite good, good, basic and needs to be improved. Where, some of the measured subjects in the questionnaire are: Usage of the vocational e-learning equipments; preparation of course materials by using multimedia presentation software; usage of e-software tools for preparing e-quizzes. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and report this data. As a result of this research, it was found out that: North Cyprus vocational high school teachers have e-learning training needs about the technologic-based, web-based and administrative e-learning applications. To fulfil the necessities of a teacher e-learning training program an action plan should be prepared, collaboratively with the e-learning experts. This research study claims to be the first and a unique study for determining e-learning training needs of vocational high school teachers, in North Cyprus.

Do Teachers e-Learning Needs Differentiate among Countries?

Conference Paper 8th European Conference on e-Learning Conference Proceedings Book , Volume 1, Issue 1, 2009, Pages 641-656

Abstract

The e-learning training needs of people are very important to consider in a society that promotes lifelong learning, in order to improve the educational status of people and to make them capable of meeting the current demands of the dynamic environments in which they operate during their everyday activities, regardless of the fields they activate in. To have more successful students, a country should have more successful teachers, and training programs should be delivered to teachers according to their needs. A critical review of literature is carried out with the aim of developing a more practical framework for achieving success in e-learning. Further more, to capture data about K-12 teachers e-learning training needs, a questionnaire, consisting of 62 items, was created by the authors and distributed online and on paper. The online questionnaire, which was posted on Surveymonkey.com, and the paper questionnaire were distributed in four countries (England, Romania, Turkey and Cyprus), in three languages (English, Romanian, and Turkish). 600 paper questionnaires were distributed in schools without computer access and in total; it was distributed to over 2000 K-12 teachers. A total of 621 questionnaires were filled in 3 months. Responses revealed that schools socio-economic backgrounds and schools racial expectations were two factors that contribute to the teachers' e-learning gap. Overall result was that 90% of the participant teachers have access to the internet both at home and at school and 57.3% of these preferred "self study". In conclusion, researchers found out that "online self learning" programs would be the best way to improve K-12 teachers' e-learning training needs. Responses on questionnaire differed significantly based upon countries. Teachers are key personnel in the integration of computers in instructional situations and in the adoption of all other innovations in schools Hence, further studies of the researchers would include implementation of "online self learning programs.

Designing a U-Learning Course Platform for the Identified Teacher Training Needs

Conference Paper Proceedings of the European Conference on e-Learning, Volume 1, Issue 1, 2011, Pages 53

Abstract

Teacher Training has undergone major changes in recent years, with the development of digital information transfer, virtual learning environments(VLE) and simulations integrated in learning management systems having a significant effect on it. Online resources like Edu 2.0 and Second Life (SL) encourage a sense of collaboration and community which now needs to be embraced through teaching and learning practice. Researchers, as a result of 4 years research study of global e-learning training needs in 25 countries analyzed the needs of the teachers' e-education requirements and their preferred e-learner environments. Although, there were some common needs like "knowledge and skill of preparing e-quizzes", they found that there was a divide among teachers' skills and knowledge's. Hence, the necessary steps to develop proper ICT infrastructure required for e-Learning are taken. As a result of all the findings in the literature, courses are decided to be delivered to bridge these. A global strategy is decided for moving towards and encouraging teachers towards deploying e-Learning for their courses. Syllabus is prepared, online evaluation is required and suggestions are taken from experts coming from different walks of life, from 25 countries. This process ended in 4 months. After having rewritten the syllabus, course material is prepared and carefully proof read by English teachers and e-education experts. The course environment is used by 51 experts and is redesigned by the researchers according to their suggestions. After 6 months of work, the last form of VirtualNeu (Virtual Near East University Portal) is published. Encouragement and proper incentive to English Teachers to participate in the e-training programs were provided by the ministry of education in North Cyprus. 80 Teachers have registered to the system and courses will start on 7 September 2011. Researchers mission for the next two years, 4 years and beyond is clear and unequivocal; like the last four years: Preparing a portal and making it universally accessible and useful for teachers; delivering e-courses for their specified training needs and, helping them to be more innovative and more creative individuals who change and improve the world education.

Abstract

As the internet and mobile applications are getting an important role in our lives, usage of mobile services also took place in educational field since the internet is widespread, which is usually called by the terms “e-learning” or “distance learning”. A known issue on e-learning is all the content’s being online and less face-to-face communication than traditional learning; this brings the problem of chasing student’s success, and advising and managing student’s way of studying. Hence, a recent hot topic, data mining, can be applied on student’s data left on e-learning portals to guide the instructor and advisors to help students’ being more successful. Recent researches done on this topic showed that e-learning combined with data mining can decrease the gap between itself and traditional learning — referred as semantic web mining in general.

Research and Trends in Computer-assisted Language Learning during 1990–2008: Results of a Citation Analysis

Original Article Eurasian Journal of Education Research, Volume 34, Issue 1, 2009, Pages 133-150

Abstract

Problem Statement: In a search of available literature, there wasn’t any articles found that are related to computer-assisted language learning (CALL) on content analysis or citation analysis. This reveals that there was a research gap for citation analysis in the field of CALL. Therefore, there’s a necessity for citation analysis in the field of CALL to examine the trends of analysis, research and citation. Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study was to examine research and trends in CALL published in selected professional [1] documents during 1990-2008. Methods: Citation analysis was used in this study to investigate documents related to CALL that are indexed by the Web of Science, Scopus EBSCOhost and ScienceDirect. “Computer-assisted language learning,” “computer-assisted language instruction,” “computer-aided language learning,” “CALL,” “technology-assisted language learning,” etc. were the keywords used in searching for documents. There were a total of 1309 documents analyzed that were judged to be relevant to the field of computer-assisted language learning. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and report this data. Findings and Results: The principal documents related to CALL published in the sources during 1990–2008 were articles and English was the most frequently-used language. The most frequent publishers of documents related to the CALL field were Computer-assisted Language Learning and Language Learning and Technology journals. Interestingly, the number of published documents increased sharply to a high level in 1997, as compared to the previous year. The majority of the source documents which were related to CALL were co-authored. Speech and Learning Systems were the most frequently used keywords. A total of 3536 cited documents were related to CALL during the years 1990-2008 by the authors. The most frequently-cited article topic was “conversation/computer-mediated communication,” and descriptive research was used most frequently in research design. Conclusions and Recommendations: The trend line is an increasing trend in the number of articles on CALL starting from the year 2000. It was recommended that a combination of citation analysis and other analysis types should be used in future research studies. It was also recommended that similar studies should be conducted with the journal and should be repeated at least every five years.

Computer based testing for e-learning: classifying questions for computer adaptive testing

Original Article Communication & Cognition, Volume 43, Issue 1, 2010, Pages 33-52

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the item difficulties of tests that are going to be used on a Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT). According to the student responses, item difficulties have been found using different approaches. Consequently, best approach to find item difficulty has been determined by a simple classification tool. By using this classification tool, the best method to find item difficulties is determined and items have been classified using Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm. This classification ended up with two different results that define the future work of this study. First one tries to reveal which algorithm is the best method for classifying the questions for CAT software and the second one has determined whether the size of item pool is important for question classification.

Implementation of Semantic Web Mining on E-Learning

Original Article Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, Volume 2, Issue 2, 2010, Pages 5820–5823

Abstract

Semantic Web is a product of Web 2.0 (second generation of web) that is supported with automated semantic agents for processing user data to help the user on ease of use and personalization of services. Web Mining is an application of data mining which focuses on discovering patterns from Web logs and data. The semantic structure can be built with the pattern or relation results discovered via web mining. By combining those two applications of both disciplines, it's possible to achieve Semantic Web Mining which is a recent hot topic in educational research. This paper gives an overview of current applications of Semantic Web Mining on e-learning which already became a base component of education.

Original Article Journal of Psychology in Africa, Volume 20, Issue 3, 2010, Pages 453-460

Abstract

The study examined student teachers' reflections on being involved in a social responsibility project in a community setting. Participants were 71 beginning students in two sequential cohorts (cohort 1 = 34, cohort 2 = 37). Data on their community learning experience were gathered using focus group discussion and reflection journals. The data were thematically analyzed. The teacher education students engaged in focus group discussions junior students who joined the project in the 2007–2008 academic year (Cohort 1) and 37 junior students who joined the project in the 2008–2009 academic year (Cohort 2). Three themes were listed for students' reflections: entry into the teaching profession, constraints and barriers, and the school principal as a community leader. Results of the study revealed that student teachers had the opportunity to have their first-hand experience in a context that they had never encountered in the same way before.

If knowledge is power why keep it secret?

Original Article Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, Volume 2, Issue 2, 2010, Pages 5650–5658

Abstract

Anadolu University, in Turkey and Athabasca University, in Canada, and are two universities publishing the open source journals Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education (TOJDE) and Internal Review of Research of Open and Distance Learning (IRRODL) respectively. They are both open source journals which have been published since 2000. Moreover, a high percentage of the full-text articles searched on the internet with the keyword “Distance Education” is found to be from TOJDE and IRRODL. Up-to-date information about the distance education keywords, distance education authors and document types is presented, as well as the settings in which research has been conducted by reviewing articles from January 2000 to February 2009 in these two distance education journals. Significant results were obtained as a result of careful investigation of 813 documents of these journals. Researchers have interesting conclusions such as: In 2002 the number of documents published in IRRODL was about seven times more than the number of documents published in TOJDE. Terry Anderson is the first-ranked author in IRRODL and the first ranked author in TOJDE is Aytekin İşman. The first ranked keyword is “Distance Education” which has a frequency four times more in TOJDE, than in IRRODL. This research study claims to be the first and a unique study reviewing two open source journals over a period of 10 years. There should be more open source journals published like TOJDE and IRRODL to give researchers the power they need to conduct more qualified researches in distance education: If knowledge is a power why keep it secret?

Divergence of digital world of teachers

Original Article Educational Technology and Society, Volume 13, Issue 1, 2010, Pages 186– 194

Abstract

There exists great diversity in the teachers' digital world. Teachers are being discriminated based on numerous educational gaps. This paper seeks to assess the extent of the digital divide among the North Cyprus vocational teachers along the four axes: age, Internet access, computer access, and performance (computing knowledge/experience). A research was carried out through a questionnaire, which was then analyzed statistically. According to the experts' views, the questionnaire was divided into three factors: technology-based e-learning applications; web-based e-learning applications, and administrative e-learning applications. There was a significant digital divergence among the teachers surveyed, which may adversely affect their ability to prepare the students to become a part of the knowledge society. To bridge these gaps in the world, action plans should be prepared, collaboratively with the instructional technologist and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) experts. This unique research study is the first to investigate the divergence of the digital world of teachers.

Original Article Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, Volume 2, Issue 2, 2010, Pages 5788–5792

Abstract

Computer Science (CS) education is more theoretical in earlier classes. After the first year of this theoretical education, the assignments and exams become more practical and applicable. The same situation keeps going in business life for CS and Information Technology (IT) areas. This will result the male outnumbering to the females in education and business life for CS relative areas. In this study, we try to discuss some inferences about this underrepresentation of females in such areas. The more practical nature of CS is held as a basis of statistical hypothesis and some statistical tests are performed on theoretical and practical overall grades of female and male students in Bahcesehir University. The results and findings are delivered with the final discussions.

Teacher perception for m-learning: scale development and teachers' perceptions

Original Article Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, Volume 27, Issue 6, 2011, Pages 544-556

Abstract

Successful integration of mobile learning (m-learning) technologies in education primarily demands that teachers' perception of such technologies should be determined. Therefore, the perceptions of teachers are of great significance. There is no available instrument that assesses teachers' perceptions of m-learning. Our research provided the first findings about teacher perceptions in Cyprus. This article describes the development, testing and application for a suitable instrument. Research data for the tests of reliability and validity were obtained from a sample of 467 teachers from the 32 schools surveyed in 2010. The final version of the Mobile Learning Perception Scale includes dimensions seeking teachers' feedback on three facets of the m-learning. Sub-dimensions are defined as ‘Aim-Mobile Technologies Fit', ‘Appropriateness of Branch’, and ‘Forms of M-learning Application and Tools’ Sufficient Adequacy of Communication'. Validity has been established by the use of factor analysis. Internal consistency coefficient and reliability of the scale showed that this instrument can be used for the future studies. According to the results of this study, teachers exhibited above medium levels of perception towards m-learning.

The efficient virtual learning environment: A case study of web 2.0 tools and Windows live spaces

Original Article Computers & Education, Volume 56, Issue 3, 2011, Pages 720-726

Abstract

Technological developments have affected teachers' instructional techniques: technology has allowed the concept of education to be viewed from different perspectives. The aim of this research is to integrate Web 2.0 tools, which are sparsely found on the internet (each tool is on a different site), into education and see if it positively affects learning; also, students' opinions about this formed environment will be sought. The study sample consists of 55 students, from whom data was collected. Descriptive statistics were calculated and a paired sample t-test was used, in order to compare pre-experience test and post-experience test means. The univariate of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare group means. Positive opinions of students show that the use of the WLS environment within Web 2.0 tools brings a new dimension to distance learning. This paper is orientated towards anyone interested in social networks and Web 2.0 tools and individuals who may be interested in this includes teachers, instructors, students and educational organisations, such as universities and schools. It may also be useful to those who have a general interest in social networks and Web 2.0 tools. (Contains 2 tables.)

The Use of Social Networking Sites in Education: A Case Study of Facebook

Original Article Journal of Universal Computer Science, Volume 19, Issue 5, 2013, Pages 658-671

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how Facebook and Web 2.0 tools create a positive effect when used in education and to investigate teachers' opinions about the Online learning environment. This experimental study was carried out in primary and secondary schools with teachers who use Facebook. The study took six weeks and 30 hours. The teachers attended lessons and accessed materials online and offline, in face-to-face learning environment. Moreover, they were able to co-operate and share information with their colleagues via Facebook. The study sample consisted of 35 teachers from primary and secondary school who constituted a blended learning group and 36 teachers from primary and high school who formed an online learning group that enrolled in the material development for Facebook course. These teachers were chosen randomly. The participation was anonymous and the study was carried out amongst volunteered teachers. Data was collected using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire created by the authors and entitled "Teachers' Opinions about Facebook in Education". The questionnaire consisted of 39 positive statements about Facebook. It was completed by teachers at the beginning (pre-experience test) and the end of the study (post-experience test). Results show that, if used for educational purposes, Facebook could bring about a positive change in teachers' opinions. Results also indicate that Facebook virtual environment helps teachers to do many activities with online classes, which is not possible to do in schools. Teachers are convinced that this environment helps students not only to improve their team work, but also to improve their learning skills. Based on the findings, recommendations are made about using Facebook in education.

Research in Physics Education: A Study of Content Analysis

Original Article Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, Volume 136, Issue 1, 2014, Pages 425-437

Abstract

The current study is a content analysis of research in Physics education that was published between the years of 2008 and 2013 and was reached through the Turkish national academic network and information centre (ULAKBIM) and EBCSO. It is aimed to guide the researchers who are planning to conduct studies in this particular field by specifying tendencies of 105 articles on physics education in terms of their methods, subject areas, research titles, data analysis techniques, and sampling types. The data obtained from the study is presented with graphic, frequency and percentage tables. According to the research results, the physics education research was mostly carried out in 2013. When physics as subject titles is take into consideration, it is found that a large part of the studies are about mechanical physics and electric physics; however, when they are analyzed from the angle of their research titles, it seems that teaching methods and cognitive dimensions came into prominence. The findings of the study indicate that the majority of the physics education studies are quantitative in nature; achievement tests, interest tests, attitude tests and aptitude tests are mainly used as data collection instruments; a descriptive analysis method is used as data analysis method. Besides, the researchers preferred to choose their sample group from secondary school students and as a sample size they focused on groups of 31-100 students. The necessary recommendations are offered to the researchers of physics education in this study.

ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE AND PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN A DEVELOPING UNIVERSITY: A CASE STUDY

Original Article Kastamonu Eğitim Dergisi, Volume 22, Issue 3, 2014, Pages 1229-1242

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the approaches of academic staff towards Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) in a developing university in Northern Cyprus by focusing on the four PKM strategies and techniques, i.e. obtaining, saving, using, and sharing knowledge. The study was designed as a case study where a questionnaire was distributed to all academics at the university. Mean scores and independent sample t-tests were used in the analysis. The findings suggest that in this developing university, general attitudes of the staff towards PKM strategies are positive. However, while strategies for effectively using and saving knowledge were widely used, strategies for obtaining new information and sharing it with colleagues were not so popular. Significant differences were found in all dimensions between the staff who had publications at national scientific meetings and those who hadn’t.

Original Article Interactive Learning Environments, Volume 22, Issue 4, 2014, Pages 529-548

Abstract

In this study, an e-learning environment was designed for teacher candidates. Teacher candidates developed multimedia-based projects by means of multimedia tools. This research aims to determine the effects of online and blended learning approaches on the success level of multimedia projects and the teacher candidates' attitudes, opinions and perceptions on e-learning. This study used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. There were two different groups in the study: online and blended groups. The online and the blended groups consisted of 30 and 32 teacher candidates, respectively. Teacher candidates in the blended group developed multimedia-based projects and shared information communicating in a WiziQ and Facebook environment with their peers and instructors when they were not at school. On the other hand, the teacher candidates in the online group communicated with their instructors and peers only in a WiziQ and Facebook environment. The results showed that the blended learning approach was more effective than the online learning approach. The usability of online learning and blended learning in higher education is addressed in recommendations for future research and practice.

M-learning adequacy and perceptions of students and teachers in secondary schools

Original Article British Journal of Educational Technology, Volume 46, Issue 1, 2015, Pages 159-172

Abstract

In recent years, the use of mobile technologies has increased in a number of fields such as banking, economy, tourism, entertainment, library research, etc. These developments have also led to the use of mobile technologies for educational purposes. The successful integration of mobile learning (m-learning) technologies in education primarily demands that teachers' and students' adequacy and perceptions of such technology should be determined. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare teachers' and students' abilities and perceptions concerning m-learning. Research data for the analysis were obtained from a sample of 467 teachers and 1556 students from 32 schools that were surveyed in Northern Cyprus. Based on our results, we conclude that teachers and students want to use m-learning in education. Their perceptions are positive but their m-learning adequacy levels are not sufficient.
