Original Article International Journal of Learning and Teaching, Volume 2, Issue 2, 2010, Pages 12-20

Abstract

With the expansion of the internet and the increasing use of computers, certain changes have occurred in the social lives of all individuals. Several negative effects, brought about by the use of computers, have also emerged along with numerous benefits of using the technology. Also, computer game skills have increasingly been applied to almost all areas of human activities within modern societies. This study aims to observe high school students’ game-playing characteristics and their personal opinions about the effects of these games, as well as giving suggestions to students, academic staff and families about the use of computer games in an effective and safe way. The study was conducted in the fall term of 2009/2010 and was carried out as a descriptive research. The study was based on 4823 students studying in North Cyprus and was held among 1148 students randomly chosen from all areas of the republic.

THE TEACHERS EVALUATION OF SOCIAL ACTIVITIES WHICH TAKE PLACE IN FULL TIME EDUCATION

Original Article International Journal of Learning and Teaching, Volume 2, Issue 1, 2010, Pages 10-14

Abstract

This research is based on the teachers` evaluation of social activities which take place in full time education. In order to receive the teachers` views on the social activities in full time education, a 5 level Likert type questionnaire has been prepared. This questionnaire is formed by 70 positive views of 8 social activity clubs about the social activities, which take place in full time education. The 16th program of SPSS (Statistical Package of the Social Sciences) has been used to analyze and verify the outcome of this questionnaire. In this study, views of the teachers have been used. The teachers, who have attended to the questionnaire, have all ticked "strongly agree", that the social activities in full time education will improve and have positive effects on the students. After collecting and analyzing all the data on this research, propositions have been given. By using these propositions, all the teachers should be informed and motivated to be able to apply the social activities in full time education. Also, there would be an appendix attached to the research.

The efficient virtual learning environment: A case study of Web 2.0 tools and Windows live spaces

Original Article Computers & Education, Volume 56, Issue 3, 2011, Pages 720–726

Abstract

Technological developments have affected teachers’ instructional techniques: technology has allowed the concept of education to be viewed from different perspectives. The aim of this research is to integrate Web 2.0 tools, which are sparsely found on the internet (each tool is on a different site), into education and see if it positively affects learning; also, students’ opinions about this formed environment will be sought. The study sample consists of 55 students, from whom data was collected. Descriptive statistics were calculated and a paired sample t-test was used, in order to compare pre-experience test and post-experience test means. The univariate of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare group means. Positive opinions of students show that the use of the WLS environment within Web 2.0 tools brings a new dimension to distance learning. This paper is orientated towards anyone interested in social networks and Web 2.0 tools and individuals who may be interested in this includes teachers, instructors, students and educational organisations, such as universities and schools. It may also be useful to those who have a general interest in social networks and Web 2.0 tools.

The Use of Social Networking Sites in Education: A Case Study of Facebook

Original Article Journal of Universal Computer Science, Volume 19, Issue 5, 2013, Pages 658-671

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how Facebook and Web 2.0 tools create a positive effect when used in education and to investigate teachers' opinions about the Online learning environment. This experimental study was carried out in primary and secondary schools with teachers who use Facebook. The study took six weeks and 30 hours. The teachers attended lessons and accessed materials online and offline, in face-to-face learning environment. Moreover, they were able to co-operate and share information with their colleagues via Facebook. The study sample consisted of 35 teachers from primary and secondary school who constituted a blended learning group and 36 teachers from primary and high school who formed an online learning group that enrolled in the material development for Facebook course. These teachers were chosen randomly. The participation was anonymous and the study was carried out amongst volunteered teachers. Data was collected using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire created by the authors and entitled "Teachers' Opinions about Facebook in Education". The questionnaire consisted of 39 positive statements about Facebook. It was completed by teachers at the beginning (pre-experience test) and the end of the study (post-experience test). Results show that, if used for educational purposes, Facebook could bring about a positive change in teachers' opinions. Results also indicate that Facebook virtual environment helps teachers to do many activities with online classes, which is not possible to do in schools. Teachers are convinced that this environment helps students not only to improve their team work, but also to improve their learning skills. Based on the findings, recommendations are made about using Facebook in education.

Abstract

In this study, an e-learning environment was designed for teacher candidates. Teacher candidates developed multimedia-based projects by means of multimedia tools. This research aims to determine the effects of online and blended learning approaches on the success level of multimedia projects and the teacher candidates' attitudes, opinions and perceptions on e-learning. This study used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. There were two different groups in the study: online and blended groups. The online and the blended groups consisted of 30 and 32 teacher candidates, respectively. Teacher candidates in the blended group developed multimedia-based projects and shared information communicating in a WiziQ and Facebook environment with their peers and instructors when they were not at school. On the other hand, the teacher candidates in the online group communicated with their instructors and peers only in a WiziQ and Facebook environment. The results showed that the blended learning approach was more effective than the online learning approach. Determining the effects of technological tool use habits on social lives

Original Article Computers in Human Behavior, Volume 48, Issue 1, 2015, Pages 457-462

Abstract

Differences have arisen between newly developed technology and the consequently changing generation’s integration of this technology into their social lives. In this study, research has been undertaken on students who use many different kinds of technological devices all together and their effects on their social lives. Also, students’ habits of technological device use, social media, educational life and communication types are discussed in this study. The general scanning model was used in the study in order to determine the effects of students’ technological device use on their social lives. These students are studying in educational departments at universities. The method determined was applied to the sampling group of the research. The questionnaire was determined in accordance with the method and was applied to all the educational faculties of universities during the scanning process. A total of 2334 students participated to the research. When the research findings were analysed in terms of friend choice, the students preferred communicating with people who use technology of the same quality as themselves. Also, the students claimed that they went through some problems with their families and friends as a result of intense technology use. It is obvious that students who spend more time on technological devices are more behind in their lessons and also have some inconveniences in their social lives. For instance; even when they go to the cinema they surf the Internet on their smart phones and while choosing a place to go they prefer places with a Wi–Fi connection. It has been observed that students can express themselves more easily in the Internet environment and they prefer places that are popular on the Internet.
