Abstract

"Past Traumas: The Representation of History and Peace Education" is a book that include the papers, presented at the conference with the same name, organised by POST Research Institute (POST RI), on 26th – 27th October 2012. The main motive behind the conference was to create an opportunity for dialogue where different people from different fields can come together to discuss their experiences and how to overcome from the ‘unwanted past’ in history education.

“City as a Text: Towards a Reading of Ahmet Ümit’s İstanbul Hatırası [Memory of Istanbul]”

Abstract

Istanbul Hatırası is a novel that is about seven murders in the city. The novel begins with a murder. Someone has been killed in front of Ataturk statue, in Sarayburnu. In the palm of the dead body, police officers found a coin of King Byzas. Throughout the novel, police find coins in other victims’ palm too. As a result, the relationship between coins and killings puzzles Nevzat, the chief commissioner, about the reason of these killings. Whilst Nevzat is trying to find the assassin(s), he finds himself in a puzzle that there is a relationship between killings and history of Istanbul. The paper, then, takes the city of Istanbul as a text and reads the novel through its history and Nevzat as a flâneur. Who is/are the victim(s)? The ones who have been killed? Or, the people who live in Istanbul now? These questions are some of the questions that the novel asks while Nevzat ‘reads’ the city by looking at the traces. The paper will analyse the novel through reading the city of Istanbul and take Nevzat, narrator of the story, as a flâneur, and argues that Istanbul is the ‘real’ protagonist of the novel.

Çalışma, İstanbul şehrini bir metin olarak ele alıp, Başkomiser Nevzat’ı ise bir flâneur olarak ele almaktadır. Kurban(lar) kim? Öldürülenler mi? Yoksa, İstanbul’da yaşamlarını sürdürern insanlar mı? Bu soruları cevaplamaya çalışacak olan çalışma boyunca Başkomiser Nevzat, şehrin ‘kalıntılar’ını okumak suretiyle, cinayetleri çözmeye çalışmaktadır. Başka bir deyişle, Başkomiser Nevzat’ın İstanbul şehrini okuduğu roman boyunca, şehrin bizzat kendisi başkarakter olup, Nevzat’ın kendisi de şehri gezen bir flâneur’dür.

"The Politics of Memory and Forgetting in Pedagogical Practices: Towards Pedagogies of Reconciliation and Peace in Divided Cyprus"

Abstract

Being raised in a divided country, we are deeply concerned with the ideological and affective practices that are used to perpetuate the existing stereotypes about the Other within each community. Using as a point of departure our own personal narratives – one of us is a Greek Cypriot (G/C) and the other Turkish Cypriot (T/C) – depicting the circulation of nationalistic technologies in education, this paper examines the prospects of peace and reconciliation education in Cyprus. The premise on which this paper rests – that nationalistic education is a problem – is not new; that premise is not the most important contribution of this paper. The more important contribution is the analysis and sorting through the G/C and T/C nationalistic pedagogical practices, to figure out ways to disrupt those practices and invoke pedagogies of reconciliation and peace in both communities. We also emphasise the importance of considering personal narratives of past trauma in critical terms to help us re-learn the wisdom of forgetting in order to remember that the weight of the past should not stand in the way of the future.

Abstract

On the way to become a "new science", communication studies used communication models to 'establish communication studies as an academic discipline' Thus, a quick survey in communication studies show that most communication models that communication studies use have nothing to do with communication studies but come from 'different fields' and they all had 'different aims' to study communication. Nonetheless, this is not the only problem within the field. What is more significant in the field is the way how these communication models are constructed and the philosophies of it. The most important 'lack' within the field is that none of models questioned language. C(ha)ommunication, then, is a deconstructive reading of the foundations of communication models.

Yeni bir bilim olma yolunda ilerleyen iletişim çalışmaları, akademik bir disiplin olarak kendisini inşa ederken, iletişim modellerinden faydalanmıştır. Böylece, alan içerisinde yapılacak bir gezinti, iletişim çalışmalarının kullandığı iletişim modellerinin büyük bir çoğunluğunun iletişimi farklı sebeplerle araştırdığını ve bu sebeplerin iletişim alanında sanıldığı gibi olmadığını ortaya koymaktadır. Ancak, alandaki tek sorun bu değildir. Bundan daha önemlisi, belirtilen modellerin nasıl yapılandırıldığı ve barındırdıkları felsefedir. Alandaki en önemli ‘eksiklik,’ bugüne değin, hiçbir modelin dil olgusunu bir sorun olarak ele almamış olmasıdır. Çalışmanın temel amacı, iletişim modellerinin ve/ya iletişim tanımlarının neden “başarısız” olduğunu göstermek, bunu yaparken de, temel sorunun dilin kendisinde yattığını belirtmektir. Belirtilen sorunları daha açık ifade edebilmek adına, önce iletişimin tanımında var olan sorunları belirtip, iletişimin neden salt iletişim değil de, aynı zamanda kaotik olduğunu göstermeye çalışacağım.

Metaphysics of Language and its Relationship with Communication Models

The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between language, communication models, and metaphysics. A quick survey on the field of communication easily shows that on the way to ‘become an academic discipline’, communication studies ‘borrows research paradigms from other disciplines’ and ‘used’ communication models to establish itself as a separate discipline However, it does not mean that communication models ‘reflect’ reality in the sense that they are ‘transparent’ and explain how communication functions. Since the beginning, while explaining how communication functions, communication models are based on the notion that communication is a ‘transmission of message’ but none of the models could be able to explain how communication function
