Intelligent Portion Identification System for Poultry Processing Plant

Abstract

The trend to replace human laborers with machines continues to increase as technology and processing devices continue to offer us higher speed and accuracy in different application areas. In poultry processing plants, the slaughter and portioning of birds is currently more hygienic as human operators are replaced with machines, thus reducing the risk of contamination from raw poultry to humans and vice versa. Nowadays, there is even more need for completely separating human operators from raw poultry, as diseases such as bird flu and swine flu are being declared as world epidemic. In many poultry processing plants, sorting the portions of a carcass is currently handled by human laborers; therefore, there is a need to provide an automated sorting system. In this paper, we present a novel intelligent system that uses image processing and a neural network to identify the different poultry portions. The proposed system is rotational invariant, and its output can be used to move robotic arms to physically separate the identified carcass portions into separate containers. Experimental results suggest that the proposed intelligent system can be effectively used in a poultry processing plant.

Identification of Noisy Poultry Portion Images Using a Neural Network

Abstract

The automatic sorting of products in food processing plants has become more important as faster processing systems emerge continuously. In raw poultry processing plants, popular chicken portions such as breasts, drumsticks, fillet, legs, and wings have to be sorted prior to packaging. Some current sorting methods use the portion weight as an indicator, however varying sizes of the different portions could result in similar weight amongst the different portions; thus causing incorrect identification. One solution is using portion images and an intelligent classifier to identify the portions, therefore, simulating the way human laborers sort the portion in a production line. The problem with the intelligent imaging method is the potential noise on images which could occur from different sources such as hardware or software. In this paper, we present a raw chicken portion identification system that uses a database of noisy and noise-free images to train a neural network to identify the different chicken portions. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed identification system, and suggest that it can be effectively used with high accuracy in a poultry processing plant.

Research in Physics Education: A Study of Content Analysis

Abstract

The current study is a content analysis of research in Physics education that was published between the years of 2008 and 2013 and was reached through the Turkish national academic network and information centre (ULAKBIM) and EBCSO. It is aimed to guide the researchers who are planning to conduct studies in this particular field by specifying tendencies of 105 articles on physics education in terms of their methods, subject areas, research titles, data analysis techniques, and sampling types. The data obtained from the study is presented with graphic, frequency and percentage tables. According to the research results, the physics education research was mostly carried out in 2013. When physics as subject titles is take into consideration, it is found that a large part of the studies are about mechanical physics and electric physics; however, when they are analyzed from the angle of their research titles, it seems that teaching methods and cognitive dimensions came into prominence. The findings of the study indicate that the majority of the physics education studies are quantitative in nature; achievement tests, interest tests, attitude tests and aptitude tests are mainly used as data collection instruments; a descriptive analysis method is used as data analysis method. Besides, the researchers preferred to choose their sample group from secondary school students and as a sample size they focused on groups of 31-100 students. The necessary recommendations are offered to the researchers of physics education in this study.

Abstract

Abstract The aim of this study is to determine the effect of simulation methods in teaching physics on students' academic success. 70 students (35 control, 35 experimental) who studied at the Near East University Faculty of Education, in the Department of Computer Education and Educational Technology, in 2013-2104 academic year participated in this research. Mixed methods approaches, which included both qualitative and quantitative methods, were used in the research. Instructional transaction included the subject of “Shooting” in the “Movements on Earth” unit. Statistical results of the data obtained after the application showed that students of the experimental group who were taught using simulations were more successful than the students of the control group who were taught by the traditional approach. Also, it was determined that students of the experimental group were satisfied by simulation-based Physics education.

ENGINEERING STUDENTS’ SELF-EFFICACY RELATED TO PHYSICS LEARNING

Abstract

Various studies have demonstrated that students who have high levels of academic high levels of academic self-efficacy are better at overcoming obstacles, have higher targets and are more confident. So, the aim of this research was to determine the self-efficacy levels of engineering students regarding physics, and to analyse the effect of their alma mater, class levels, the type of engineering programme in which they are being educated and academic success variables on their self-efficacy regarding physics. In the present research “Physics self-efficacy scale” including two factors which were developed by the authors was used to collect the data. Considering one of the independent variables, such as their alma mater, it can be seen that students who graduated from private high schools had a higher level of self-efficacy. In addition, compared to other students, those in their first year had a higher level of self-efficacy, which led to greater academic success.

That is why the aim of study is to attract attention to its potential in education field and provide to make it recognize more by educators and researchers. Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect on the achievement, motivation and self-sufficiency of students of the flipped classroom approach adapted to Keller’s ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction) motivation model and applied to a physics course. The study involved 66 students divided into two classes of a physics course. The first class used the traditional lecture format while the flipped classroom model was used in the second. The research data were obtained via the physics concept test, motivation questionnaire, physics self-sufficiency scale and semi-structured interviews. It was found that the experimental group students were achieve more than the students in the control group. An increase in motivation and self-sufficiency of the students in the experimental group was identified as well. Thereafter, semi-structured interviews were carried out with students of the experimental group. It was found that they had positive opinions regarding the flipped classroom approach.
