Comparative study of the security ın secondary education according to the ideas of administrators, teachers and parents

Abstract

Problem Statement: In order for an education system to reach its goals, it is essential for the schools that make up the education system to do so beforehand. Constitution of physically and psychologically secured school environment is one of the preconditions for achiving such a goal. Security concerns affect students performance. Therefore, particularly school administration and teachers, but in general whole society have responsibilities on the subject of school security. Unwanted incidents may happen in schools or during students’ work outside but related to school. These incidents may be the accidents the students get exposed to in educational areas as well as they may be violent incidents among the students. Both cases threaten the students’ security. Everything that students go through from the time they leave home for school until they return home from school is considered within school security. School security is of higher importance in schools that provide transportation. School security covers security between home and school, in the school and in the classrooms. Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study is to determine opinions of the teachers and directors serving in secondary schools and highs chools within the Education System of Northern Cyprus and parents about the importance of student security and to what extent it is achieved in the schools. Methods: In this study, interview and observation technique from the qualitative methods are used. Middle schools and high school, each of them are the biggest in their regions around North Cyprus are chosen for this study. These 18 high schools and 14 middle schools include 26 school administrator, 30 teacher and 27 parent (83 participants altogether). Findings and Results: In this section, The participants have expressed the need for measures towards increasing school and student security in the interview questions. The parents form the group with the lowest information about the measures necessary for school and student security in the scope of the study. The parents do not go to the school and get information on their children and the school unless they are invited by the directors or the teachers serving in the school. Conclusion and Recommendations: As a result, According to most of the participants, it can be concluded that measures against natural disasters are necessary in schools. However it can also be evaluated that apart from disaster demonstrations, seminars and fire corners, no significant measures take place in the schools. The maintenance measures should immediately be taken as the school buildings are neglected and very old. Student safety is established by informative boards and keeping the potentially dangerous material locked, making first aid materials available in the gyms, laboratories and ateliers and make access to these places only under the teachers’ control. However some of the participants and almost half of the participant teachers who use these places due to their occupation express that no measures or insufficient measures are taken in these places for student safety.

Bir eğitim sisteminin amacına ulaşabilmesi, o eğitim sistemi içerisinde yer alan okulların amacına ulaşmasına bağlıdır. Bu amacın gerçekleşmesi için gerekli olan ön koşullardan birisi de özellikle öğrenciler için fiziksel ve psikolojik olarak güvenli bir okul ortamının oluşturulmasıdır. Güvenlik kaygısı, öğrencilerin performansını düşürür. Dolayısıyla, okul idaresi ve öğretmenler başta olmak üzere okul güvenliği konusunda toplumun tümünün sorumlulukları vardır. Bu araştırmanın amacı Kuzey Kıbrıs Eğitim Sistemi içinde yer alan ortaokul ve liselerde görev yapan öğretmenlerin, yöneticilerinin ve velilerin, öğrenci güvenliğinin önemi ve okullarında gerçekleşme derecesi ile ilgili görüşlerini belirlemektir. Bu araştırma nitel bir araştırma olup, 18 lise ve 14 ortaokuldan 26 okul yöneticisi, 30 öğretmen ve 27 veli olmak üzere 83 katılımcı araştırmaya dahil edilmiştir. Araştırmanın sonucunda okul ve öğrenci güvenliği, okul yönetimlerinin tek başlarına altından kalkamayacağı kadar önemli ve çok yönlü bir mesele olduğu, okulun fiziki durumu ve geniş bir çevreyle etkileşim içerisinde olması nedeniyle okul güvenliğinin sağlanmasında toplumun tüm katmanları birlikte hareket etmeleri gerektiği, her şeyden önce okul güvenliğinin sağlanmasının bir devlet politikası haline getirilmesi gerektiği sonuçlarına varılmıştır. Ayrıca araştırmada okul idaresi ile okul çevresi arasında iyi ilişkiler kurulmasını, çevre güvenliği için, karakol, muhtarlık ve çevre halkının desteğinin sağlanması önerilmektedir.

An Evaluation on Mainstreaming Practices of Primary Schools According to the Views of School Administrators, Teachers, and Parents

Abstract

Within the framework of action research, connectivity theory has been suggested as a means to encourage learners to manage the process during the teaching practicum. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of self-control and knowledge management abilities of prospective teachers in compiling a reflective portfolio in teaching practice as a part of a teaching practicum course. 44 prospective teachers participated in this study. In the study, qualitative research (i.e. semi structured interviews and reflective reports) was used. Research findings show that the prospective teachers require both self-control and the ability to manage knowledge in compiling a reflective portfolio. Self-control and self-learning through dialogue and negotiation with peers and course tutors enhance the prospective teachers’ reflection, ability in intellectual flexibility and skills in knowledge management. In addition to this, the research findings highlight how connectivity theory can be implemented in course instruction and enhance the professional experience through reflective portfolio


Özet

Bu çalışmada eylem çalışmasına bağlı, bağlantı teorisinin öğretim sürecinde uygulanması ele alınmıştır. Araştırmaya 44 aday öğretmen katılmıştır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma çerçevesinde yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat ve yansıtıcı raporlar veri toplama süreci olarak kullanılmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, öğretmen adayının yansıtıcı ürün dosyası geliştirmesinde öz denetim ve bilgi yönetimi becerisine sahip olması gerektiğini ve yansıtıcı ürün dosyası kullanımının bu becerilere katkı sağladığını göstermektedir. Öğretmen adaylarının sahip olduğu öz denetim ve arkadaşları ile kurmuş olduğu diyalog, müzakere kullanarak bilgiyi yönetmede etkili olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Öz denetim ve öz disiplin ile öğretmen adaylarının arkadaşlarıyla ve öğretmen ile arasında kurduğu diyalog ve münazara aynı zamanda yansıtıcı ve esnek düşünme becerisine de katkı sağlamıştır. Buna ek olarak, araştırma bulguları bağlantı teorisinin yansıtıcı ürün dosyası kullanarak ders tasarımında uygulanabileceğini ve mesleki beceriye katkısı olacağını vurgulamıştır.

A Comparative Case Study: Opinions of Ministry of Education, Teachers, Parents and Managers About Education Reforms in North Cyprus

Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the opinions of Ministry of Education, teachers, parents, and unions regarding to the main problems of education in North Cyprus in order to contribute for the development of education system of the North Cyprus. It was also believed that this research could make a greater contribution to the comprehension of the educational and societal reality in North Cyprus. In this research, semi-structured interview was used as a notion of qualitative research method. Totally, 110 participants were interviewed that the senior managers of the union, both the managers and the employees of Ministry of Education, teachers, and the parents participated research. According to the findings of comparative case study, it was revealed that the education unions looked after their own benefits and privileges by deviating from their aim; they did not take the role which they had to take to educate the unions, they did not have any prospective research which concerned a certain plan and an attempt, and it was also determined that there was a great divergence between education unions and Ministry of Education. In this research, within the context of education unions, which they could make greater contributions to the improvement of society and education, what offered to the managers of education union was that they should arrange more education councils in order to allow North Cyprus to reach the education level of Europe and other developed countries. Besides, they should inform the parents and also education unions should take an active and a more efficient role in increasing both the numbers and qualifications of education conferences and the workshops within the framework of a certain plan and a program.


Özet

Bu araştırma sonucunda elde edilecek bulgular doğrultusunda KKTC’nde eğitimin temel sorunlarına ilişkin Eğitim Bakanlığı, öğretmen, veli ve sendikaların görüşleri tespit edilerek Kuzey Kıbrıs eğitim sisteminin gelişmesine katkıda bulunacağı değerlendirilmektedir. Bu araştırmayla KKTC’nde eğitimsel ve toplumsal gerçekliğin kavranmasına daha fazla katkı sağlayabileceği düşünülmektedir. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniği kullanılmıştır. Sendika üst düzey yöneticileri, Eğitim Bakanlığı yöneticileri ve çalışanları, öğretmenler ve veliler olmak üzere toplam 110 katılımcı ile görüşülmüştür. Yapılan karşılaştırmalı durum çalışmasında elde edilen bulgulara göre eğitim sendikalarının amaçları dışında hareket ederek hak ve menfaat peşinde koştukları, sendikaların eğitimde üstlenmeleri gereken rolü almadıkları, plan, girişim ve ileriye yönelik herhangi bir çalışma içerisinde olmadıkları, eğitim sendikaları ile Eğitim Bakanlığı arasında büyük görüş ayrılıkları olduğu görülmüştür. Eğitim sendikalarının toplumun eğitiminin gelişimine daha fazla katkı sağlamaları kapsamında Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın Avrupa ve gelişmiş ülkelerin eğitim düzeyine yükseltilmesi amacıyla daha fazla eğitim şuraları düzenlemeleri, velilerin bilinçlendirilmesi, eğitim seminerlerinin, konferanslarının ve çalıştaylarının sayısının ve niteliğinin belirli bir plan ve programla daha da artırılması konularında çok daha etkin ve verimli rol almaları eğitim sendika yöneticilerine bu araştırmada önerilmektedir.

An Evaluation on Mainstreaming Practices of Primary Schools According to the Views of School Administrators, Teachers, and Parents

Abstract

Individuals are born with various skills and needs. They enter into a life-long process of meeting these needs and developing the correct usage and appropriateness of these skills. The process of making intentional changes in one’s life through behavior is called education. No one can be deprived of their right to education. Education is every individual’s constitutional right and it is compulsory. This is stated in the 59th amendment of the Northern Cyprus Constitution as follows: “Every child regardless of gender must receive education until the age of fifteen and they have the right to free education until the age of eighteen.” This study investigates through comparison the views of administrators, teachers, and parents on the application of mainstreaming in primary schools. This research uses the qualitative research method. In order to consult the opinions of the participants on mainstreaming applications, a semi-structured interview form was prepared. The data collected from the research was analyzed using the content analysis method. The data from the content analysis was analyzed in four stages. These stages are coding the data, finding the themes, arranging the data according to the codes and themes, and interpreting the data. For the study group, 10 administrators, 14 teachers, and 12 parents were included in the research. This study found that the requirements for mainstreaming are not sufficient nor did is there enough information, that normal class teachers are insufficient in their knowledge, that families cannot accept their child’s situation, that there is little participation in class, that classes are disorderly, and that there is also a problem with “normal” children in their approach to children with special needs. As a result of the study, the majority of participants agreed that special education teachers should either work on their own or in collaboration with class teachers during the preparation stage of mainstreaming. Almost a quarter of the participants stated that preparations for mainstreaming are done by the class teacher. More than 75% of the participants stated that support services are provided for mainstreaming applications, while less than 75% of them said partial support is provided.

Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta Milli Eğitim Gençlik ve Spor bakanlığına bağlı bünyesinde kaynak oda bulunan devlet ilkokullarında kaynaştırma uygulamalarının uygulanabilirliğinin, kaynaştırmanın geldiği son durumunun tespiti önemlidir. Kaynaştırma uygulanması konusunda bilgi ve görüş alınacak kişilerde pek tabi ki, kaynaştırma uygulamaları ile doğrudan muhatap olan yönetici, öğretmen ve velilerdir. Bu kapsamda araştırmanın amacı Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta eğitim sistemi içinde yer alan kaynaştırma uygulaması yapılan ilkokullarda, yönetici, öğretmen ve velilerin kaynaştırma faaliyetlerine yönelik görüşlerini belirlemektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda KKTC’de kaynaştırma uygulaması yapılan ilkokullarda, yönetici, öğretmen ve velilerin kaynaştırma uygulamalarına ilişkin görüşlerine ulaşabilmek için bazı sorulara cevaplar aranmıştır.
