Statistical Reasoning of Impact of Infographics on Education

Conference Paper Procedia, Volume 102, Issue 0, 2016, Pages 370–377

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine students’ views about infographics prepared for anatomy lesson. A case study, which is one of the qualitative research method, was used as a model. The participants were the registered students for the anatomy course of the Physical Education and Sports Department (PES) at Near East University. During a six weeks educational period, the study was applied with the participation of 140 students. As a preparation, students have been informed about infographics before the study. Then, the infographics about digestive anatomy was presented to the students under the anatomy course curriculum. At the end of the course presentation, a semi-structured interview form was delivered in order to get students’ opinions about infographic and “infographical anatomy” during the course. More than half of the students (n = 74) in the study stated that they did not know the meaning of the word “infographic”, and also much more students (n = 84) stated that they had never seen infographics prior to this study. In the end of the study, the students think that more effective visuals are used by infographics instead of traditional course visuals. They also think that the subject of infographics in general is more understandable and more satisfactory. Moreover, since infographics are easier to remain in the minds, they are much more effective. This study has revealed the presentation by infographics can be used in many other courses. By this research, it can be claimed that infographics are not only more effective but also more permanent in the minds. This teaching method can transmit information to the increasingly widespread use, and thus, the conventional form of lectures might be possible to transform towards easy understandable courses having much more infographics. he Relationship of Computer Games and Reported Anger in Young People

Original Article Australian Journal of Guidance and Counselling, Volume 22, Issue 1, 2013, Pages 33-43

Abstract

Playing computer games is a routine activity for most young people today. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of time spent playing computer games, the violence of the game, and self-reported anger of students in North Cyprus. Four hundred participants between the ages of 15-18 completed the State-Trait Anger and the Anger Expression questionnaire, together with a section on gaming. The results showed that most (43%) students played computer games 3-4 days a week, with many (31.5%) playing every day. It was found that students who played computer games for 2-3 hours a day scored higher on expressed anger than those who played for less than half an hour a day. Those young people who preferred to play action, adventure, fight and strategy games were found to have reported higher levels of anger than those who played other types of computer games. The implications for guidance counsellors, parents and teachers are discussed.

Abstract

Effectiveness of Cloud Systems and Social Networks in Improving Self-directed Learning Abilities and Developing Positive Seamless Learning Perceptions By: Ozdamli, Fezile JOURNAL OF UNIVERSAL COMPUTER SCIENCE Volume: 19 Issue: 5 Pages: 602-618 Published: 2013 This study aims to analyze the conditions which affect students' perception on self-directed abilities and seamless learning using cloud systems and social network applications. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used in the study. Forty teacher candidates from the Near East University who took the course "Special Learning Methods" participated in the study. The study was carried out in one academic semester (12 weeks) according to the blended learning approach. Each learner had an individually networked laptop or another mobile device which included a "clip to EverNote". The results indicated that Mobile Supported Seamless Learning spaces (MSSL) support flexibility in place and time of learning, improve learners' self-directed learning, and change their perceptions on seamless learning.

M-Learning Adequacy and Perceptions of Students and Teachers in Secondary Schools.

Original Article BJET, Volume 46, Issue 1, 2015, Pages 159-172

Abstract

M-learning adequacy and perceptions of students and teachers in secondary schools By: Ozdamli, Fezile; Uzunboylu, Huseyin BRITISH JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Volume: 46 Issue: 1 Pages: 159-172 Published: JAN 2015 In recent years, the use of mobile technologies has increased in a number of fields such as banking, economy, tourism, entertainment, library research, etc. These developments have also led to the use of mobile technologies for educational purposes. The successful integration of mobile learning (m-learning) technologies in education primarily demands that teachers' and students' adequacy and perceptions of such technology should be determined. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare teachers' and students' abilities and perceptions concerning m-learning. Research data for the analysis were obtained from a sample of 467 teachers and 1556 students from 32 schools that were surveyed in Northern Cyprus. Based on our results, we conclude that teachers and students want to use m-learning in education. Their perceptions are positive but their m-learning adequacy levels are not sufficient.

Original Article EURASIA JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION , Volume 12, Issue 6, 2016, Pages 1589-1603

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect on the achievement, motivation and self-sufficiency of students of the flipped classroom approach adapted to Keller's ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction) motivation model and applied to a physics course. The study involved 66 students divided into two classes of a physics course. The first class used the traditional lecture format while the flipped classroom model was used in the second. The research data were obtained via the physics concept test, motivation questionnaire, physics self-sufficiency scale and semi-structured interviews. It was found that the experimental group students were achieve more than the students in the control group. An increase in motivation and self-sufficiency of the students in the experimental group was identified as well. Thereafter, semi-structured interviews were carried out with students of the experimental group. It was found that they had positive opinions regarding the flipped classroom approach.

Determination of Secondary School Students' Attitudes towards Tablet PC Supported Education

Original Article Journal of Universal Computer Science, Volume 22, Issue 1, 2016, Pages 4-15

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the attitudes of students towards tablet supported education and its effects on its usability. The study was designed as a one-group semi-experimental model using pre-test and post-test. The study group consisted of 319 students in 6th and 9th grade studying at a private college, where 160 of the students were females and 159 of them were males. Frequency, Paired t-test and Independent t-test were applied to analyze the data. The pre-test and post-test results indicated that there were significant positive differences in students' attitudes toward tablet supported education, students' attitudes towards usability of the tablets in education and also in their general attitudes. There was a significant difference between the mean scores of the female and male students' attitudes towards tablet-supported education. However, there was no significant difference between the students' attitudes towards the usability of the tablet and in their overall attitudes.
