Are Computer Education Teacher Candidates Ready for M-Learning ?

Abstract

Known that the mobile devices used by a wide section of daily life. In this context our study, the opinions of teacher candidates towards using of mobile learning devices and applications. The research was conducted with in the frame of general survey model and questionnaires. 2011-2012 fall semester of the research group of this study consisted of 216 students of Near East University, Computer Education and Instructional Technology Department. CEIT students study results to determine whether they are ready for mobile learning are discussed. According to the results of e-learning applications previously attended the majority of students were determined. It seems that students use the internet every day. They want to use mobile learning applications in courses.

Abstract

The distance learning is an instruction system which has various and independent instruction environment, customized lecture design, method and techniques. Distance learning has been improving from letter learning to mobile learning. That's why the aim of this research is to lead for new researchers on mobile learning area. Also we will find out new trends on mobile learning through this research. This research has limited with 2008-2013 years and it has been used EBSCO as a database. The sample of this study consist 67 articles. The criteria of this research is reported according groups of publication dates, countries, research areas, methods, education levels, researching methods, used mobile devices.

Abstract

Students’ psychological and cognitive development plays an important role in empowering their future career. Teacher candidates’ perceptions in participation and practice in community service learning course is important in accomplishing the necessary development on this issue. This study aims to determine the perception of the teacher candidates towards “Community Service Learning” course. Mixed methods research is used for the study. The quantitative data is collected from 144 female 110 male teacher candidates by the scale “Perceptions of Teacher Candidates towards the practice of Community Service Learning Course” and qualitative data is collected from 76 teacher candidates with semi structured interview questions developed by the researchers. ANOVA, t-test and Mann Whitney U-Test are applied to analyze the collected quantitative data and open coding method for the qualitative data. The results of the study indicate that community service learning course empowers teacher candidates in terms of socialization, personal development, social responsibility and awareness to community needs.

Views of Students’, Teachers’ and Parents’ on the Tablet Computer Usage in Education

Abstract

This study aims at identification of views of teachers, students and their parents at Near East College in North Cyprus on use of tablets in education. The research is a descriptive case study. In collection of data, semi-structured interviews appropriate for qualitative research methods are used. Study group for this research is composed of high educated teachers (f=64), students (f=319) and also parents (f=134). As result of the analysis carried out in this research which was performed in this direction, it has been seen that teachers, students and parents evaluate the problems related with tablet PCs under the following two sub-dimensions; the experienced problems of during tablet supported education and the benefits of tablet pc usage in education. If we look at the results in this line, we come across with connectivity and technical infrastructure problems which interrupts the lesson or even causes it to end as the biggest problem experienced by teachers and students during the learning activities. The biggest concern of parents, another of our study groups, regarding the use of tablets in education is that games may decrease students’ motivation. Teachers stated the biggest benefit provided by tablet supported education is the increase in learning speed of students as a result of visuals and interaction provided by tablets.

New Trends on Mobile Learning Area: The Review of Published Articles on Mobile Learning in Science Direct Database

Abstract

Articles published in Science Direct between 2009 and 2014 (May) were screened in this research. This is because of its respectable position in the field of technology and peer-reviewed secured structure of this database. From a total of 161 articles within the scope of the screening 156 articles were included in the study. Through this research, new trends in mobile learning activities in recent years will be determined and a new way will be shown for researchers . "Mobile learning" keywords used during researching process and all the articles with "mobile learning" keywords were included in this study. As a result of this research, it is determined that the most studies in the field of mobile learning were published in 2013 in Malaysia, UK and Taiwan. Particularly undergraduate students was selected as the sample group of the researches. It is emerged that, experimental research was used maximum as a research model. Quantitative data collection tools were used most as a means of data collection. It was emerged that foreign language education is the most widely used field in mobile learning. It is seen that smart phones as mobile learning devices and IOS operating system as an operating system were used in the most researches. Mobile-based method is seen to be used as the teaching method in the present study.

The Impact of M-Learning Activities on the IT Success, Lifelong Learning and M-Learning Capabilities of the Special Education Teacher Candidates

Abstract

The advantages of using mobile devices and cloud computing services in education are accepted by many researchers. Also, in educating students who are in need of special education, the use of cloud computing services is inevitable. So, this case requires teacher candidates who are planning to teach in those special education centres to be able to use these technologies sufficiently, be able to perceive positively and be lifelong learners in order to be able to follow future improvements and innovations. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify the perceptions of teacher candidates’ mobile learning implementations that are supported by cloud computing services towards mobile learning, their capabilities along with their lifelong learning capabilities. This is an experimental study. Study group consists of 56 teacher candidates from special education department. Lessons are lectured in a blended learning environment of SkyDrive cloud with a variety of materials. Pre-test and post-test results of the students in terms of using mobile tools in mobile learning environment, success in information technology, and the effect of these technologies on students’ lifelong learning capabilities.

The Special Education Teachers’ Opinions Regarding Technological Devices in Education

Abstract

This study aims to identify the views of special education teachers in North Cyprus about the use of technological devices in special education. A descriptive case study was conducted in this research. Semi-structured interview method which is appropriate for qualitative research methods was used to collect the data. Sample of this research included 52 special education teachers working in the special education schools in North Cyprus. According to the results of this research, it is highlighted that most of the teachers try to use technological devices for educational activities. Teachers indicated that technological devices attract the attention of their students with disability in lessons. Thus, it can be stated that teachers believe that the use of technological devices in special education can improve disabled students’ success with various teaching environments and interactive applications. In addition, disadvantage of using tablet PC in education completely depends on special education teachers and their duration of usage. In conclusion, digital devices which have begun to be used by all human societies in these days affect the area of education from a digital anthropological perspective. Teachers indicated that positive consequences of this effect could be achieved through specific applications developed for these devices. Teachers try to use these devices with their individual efforts and think that these devices are effective. When we consider from the perspective of children, they gained familiarity with digital environments as other individuals and teachers indicated that children are more interested in materials presented through digital devices and educational environments.

Opinions of Science Teachers on the Use of Tablet PCs in Science Education: A Case Study of North Cyprus

Abstract

This study aims to identify the views of science teachers at Near East College in North Cyprus on the use of tablets in science courses. This research is a descriptive case study. As a tool of data collection, semi-structured interviews were conducted and qualitative research methods were used in this study. An interview form consisting of 12 questions was prepared by the researchers. The developed form was controlled by three academic experts in the field of science and information technology education, and it was decided that the questions were suitable and sufficient to the purpose of the research. Study group for this research was composed of science teachers (f=11). In the analyses of the data, descriptive analysis method was carried out on the qualitative data obtained in the research. According to the obtained findings it was stated that; the usage of tablet computers in science education is quite effective in converting the students’ abstract concepts into concrete concepts, it helps to form a relationship between the topics like the cell and atoms defined at a molecular level, it creates an opportunity for the internalization of the topic, the online quizzes create an opportunity for permanent learning, it enriches the power of the teachers expression of the course, it creates an opportunity for more effective conduction of courses with the presented materials, it eases the learning of students who poses different learning methods by catering to the needs of the different types of intelligences, it is effective in removing the negative barriers that can be formed towards the topic and the course, by having a chance to view the experiments with the aid of a tablet, that are especially dangerous and costly for the classroom environment, it means that the experiments conducted in the laboratories can be recorded by the students and it has the advantage of making a contribution to the learning of the students in the sense that, while these experiments are being watched over and over. In addition, the teachers stated that tablet supported instruction in science lessons in general did not create any negativity towards this topic.
