“Clustering of Halophytes from an Inland Salt Marsh in Turkey According to Their Ability to Accumulate Sodium and Nitrogenous Osmolytes”,

Original Article Environmental and Experimental Botany,, Volume 57, Issue 1-2, 2006, Pages 139-153

Abstract

Fifty-one species belonging to 16 families of halophytes have been collected in salty areas surrounding the Seyfe Lake in Central Anatolia (Turkey). Their plant/sodicity relationships and the involvement of nitrogenous solutes in their osmotic adjustment have been more specifically investigated in order to compare adaptative traits involved in their salt tolerance with those well-known occurring in halophytes from marine salt marshes. The internal molecular ratio between [K+]int and [K+ + Na+]int was found to be low in the shoots of dicots due to important abilities to accumulate Na+. In contrast this ratio was higher in the monocots, this being due to low contents of Na+ not to high ones of K+. This suggests specific traits which allow the dicots to absorb, accumulate and compartmentalize Na+ in order to provide cheap osmotic particles for osmotic adjustment. In terms of putative compatible solutes derived from primary nitrogen metabolism the study has been restricted to free proline and glycine betaine. It reveals that the 51 species investigated could be discriminated according to their capacity to accumulate, under natural saline conditions, either proline or glycine betaine or both of these compounds. It was also shown that species that behaved as glycine betaine accumulators behaved as poor proline accumulators and vice versa. This might suggest that in a number of species exhibiting attributes for glycine betaine production the level of free proline could be under the negative control of that of glycine betaine. A number of other nitrogenous osmolytes, such as ?1-acetylornithine, ß-alanine betaine and choline-O-sulfate were also found in certain species. Plantago maritima previously found to accumulate sorbitol in response to saline conditions was shown here to coaccumulate proline and glycine betaine in addition to sorbitol which was also found to be abundant. Phenetic analysis of the set of data obtained allow to discriminate two main clusters of halophytic species refering mainly to the traits associated with proline and (or) glycine betaine accumulation. As expected, the majority of the Chenopodiaceae, exhibited a distinct behavior within cluster II, based on their dual ability to store Na+ and glycine betaine. Some species of this family did not conform with this model. Thus, it becomes clear that salt tolerance in halophytic plants which might partly result from the cooperativity of a number of well-conserved mechanisms could also result from specific processes that could be modulated by the saline environment.

"Essential Oils from Wild and Micropropagated Plants of Origanumm minutiflorum O. Schwarz & Davis."

Original Article Journal of Essential Oil Research (JEOR), Volume 22, Issue 2, 2010, Pages 135-137

Abstract

Water-distilled essential oil of Origanum minutiflorum, an endemic species in Turkey was analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Carvacrol (78.6%), p-cymene (7.7%) and ?-terpinene (2.2%) were identified as major constituents. The oil of micropropagated O. minutiflorum was also investigated and the results were compared with those from wild plants. Phytochemical studies of the plants indicated that in vitro propagation method increased the phenolic monoterpene (carvacrol) content, with a similar profile of other constituents.

Effects of Perimenstrual Complaints on Sexuality and Disability and Coping Strategies of University Students

Original Article Sexuality and Disability, Volume 31, Issue 1, 2013, Pages 93-101

Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of psychological and somatic symptoms related to the menstrual cycle. These symptoms occur specifically during last half of the luteal phase of menstrual cycle and resolve by the end of menstruation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of premenstrual and menstrual complaints on well-being and sexuality and their relation with analgesic use as a coping strategy in university students. This study focused on the experience of perimenstrual and menstrual complaints of university students with regular menstrual cycles and their coping strategy. The research data were collected by means of an introductory form with open-ended questions and the responses were assessed for the presence of premenstrual and menstrual complaints, their effects and coping strategies of the students. Of 202 participants enrolled in the study, the mean age was 20.5 ± 2.1 years. Fifty-seven participants (33.1 %) were adolescent girls while 115 (66.9 %) of them were adults. Among students, the five most common complaints reported were irritability (76.7 %), breast fullness (68.6 %), back pain (67.4 %), abdominal distension (60.5 %) and sentimentalism (56.4 %). Of participants, 102 (59.3 %) responded as having disability and 34 (19.4 %) were found as having impaired sexuality. Back pain and weakness were found to be related with disability. For impaired sexuality, headache and sentimentalism were found to be significant predictors. One hundred and thirty-three (77.3 %) subjects reported that they have been using some medication; however, 99 (57.6 %) students have never sought help. The most common medications reported were analgesics (n = 117, 68 %). Overall, we found comparable distribution of complaints and coping strategies in adolescent and adult students. A majority of women experience mild to severe physical and psychological discomfort during the perimenstrual period, which may affect their life quality. There is a need for a program to increase awareness about PMS and menstrual complaints and suitable coping strategies for its symptomatology in the university settings to improve quality of life and school performance of the students.

Herbal Medicine Use Among Diabetes Mellitus Patients in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,

Original Article Journal of Medicinal Plants Research , Volume 7, Issue 22, 2013, Pages 1652-1664

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic, metabolic disease which may result in further complications. Traditional herbal medicines are used all over the world by diabetic patients. It is estimated that morethan 1000 plant species are used against diabetes as folk medicine. Medical authorities such as WorldHealth Organization encourage research on herbal medicines to come up with alternatives for treatmentof diabetes, since oral antidiabetic agents have side effects in the long term. To date, a vast number ofplants have been evaluated for their antidiabetic activity. Although, Northern Cyprus has a rich floraand an approximately 11% incidence of diabetes mellitus, few ethnobotanical studies were carried outagainst diabetes. The aim of this study was to provide a list of plants that are used as folk medicine forthe treatment of diabetes mellitus in Northern Cyprus. A survey was conducted between November andDecember of 2011 with 100 diabetic patients who consented to participate in the study. The use of 18 plants by 32 diabetic patients was documented. These patients used a variety of plants along with their conventional antidiabetic medicines to control their blood glucose levels. Ethnobotanical studies are crucial in terms of revealing the traditional use of medicinal plants and guiding research on new drugs. However, further investigations are needed.

The Knowledge and Attitude of the Healthcare Professionals towards Pharmacovigilance and Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting in Northern Cyprus

Original Article J Pharmacovigilance , Volume 4, Issue 1, 2016, Pages 1-7

Abstract

Background: Adverse drug reaction (ADR) is a response to a medicinal product which is noxious and unintended. Spontaneous reporting of ADRs has remained the cornerstone of pharmacovigilance and is important in maintaining patient safety. Therefore, we aimed to assess knowledge and attitude of the health professionals towards pharmacovigilance and ADR reporting. Method: A face to face questionnaire was conducted with 90 community pharmacists, 98 nurses and 71 physicians in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), who consented to participate in the study. Results: Of those that did respond, only 13% of the pharmacists, 2% of the nurses and 20% of the physicians had knowledge about ‘pharmacovigilance’. Respectively 32%, 12% and 54% of participants stated that their patients reported them an ADR within the recent year, but only 10% of the pharmacists and 3% of nurses and physicians stated that they sent an ADR report to the concerned organization. The common reasons for under-reporting was stated as lack of knowledge of where/how to report, lack of time, ADR reporting being not mandatory, belief that it was not their responsibility, hesitation about their clinical knowledge, avoiding the professional liability. Conclusion: The results show that the healthcare professionals in Northern Cyprus have insufficient knowledge about pharmacovigilance. Therefore, it seems there is an extensive need for a training program about pharmacovigilance and ADR reporting.

Optimization of Regeneration Conditions and In Vitro Propagation of Sideritis Stricta Boiss & Heldr

Original Article International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, Volume 90, Issue -, 2016, Pages 59-62

Abstract

In this study the micropropagation of endemic species Sideritis stricta was investigated. Leaf segmentsand shoot explants (hypocotyl, single node and shoot tips) taken from in vitro growing plantlets andcultured on MS and B5 media containing different growth regulators combinations BAP (0.0, 1.0, 2.0and 3.0 mg/l) and NAA (0.0, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/l). MS and B5 media supplemented with BAP (1.0, 2.0 and3.0 mg/l) and NAA (0.1 mg/l) combinations or only BAP and kinetin (2.0 and 3.0 mg/l) were used at thesubculture experiments of shoots and MS and B5 media supplemented with different concentrationsof IBA (0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 10.mg/l) were used at the rooting experiments. S. stricta seeds germinatedat the rate of 100% when the seed coat was removed and endoperm with embryo part cultured on B5medium. The single node explants taken from in vitro germinated and grown 30–40 days plantlets onB5 medium have been determined as the most successful explant at all used hormone combinations. B5medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l BAP + 0.1 mg/l NAA and 2.0 mg/l BAP + 0.5 mg/l NAA was determinedas the most effective medium on shoot formation. At the first and second subculture, the highest shootformation was maintained on medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l BAP + 0.1 mg/l NAA and the numberof shoots per explant were 4 and 2.11, respectively. The highest multiplication rate has been determinedas 33.76 at the end of second subculture. The best rooting was achieved on B5 medium supplementedwith 4.5 mg/l IBA. The rooted shoots were successfully acclimatized to outdoor conditions and survivalrate was determined as 90%.

Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Sideritis cypria Post endemic in Northern Cyprus

Original Article Journal of Essential Oil Research , Volume 00, Issue 00, 2016, Pages 1-5

Abstract

In this study, chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Sideritis cypria, which is an endemic taxon in Northern Cyprus, were investigated. The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In general, the GC and GC-MS analysis illustrated that fifty compounds were identified representing 96.9% of the oil. Major components were epi-cubebol (11.9%), trans-piperitol (8.9%) and pinene (8.1%), respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was tested by disc diffusion method against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Bacillus cereus (ATCC 10876), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) bacteria and Candida albicans (ATCC 90028) yeast. The results showed that the inhibition zone of S. cypria essential oil against C. albicans at maximum dose (10 µl) was higher than positive control Nystatin. The oil showed similar inhibitory zone to that of the positive control (TMP-SMX) against B. cereus at maximum dosage 10 µl. In addition, the inhibitory effect of the oil against E. coli measured only at the 10 µl as 10.33 ± 0.58. Furthermore, the inhibition zones against S. aureus was ranged from 9.00 ± 2.00 to 24.00 ± 1.73 while P. aeruginosa was found to be resistant in all doses

Herbs Potentially Enhancing Sports Performance

Review Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research, Volume 12, Issue 1/2, 2014, Pages 25-34

Abstract

Herbs have a long history of use as traditional medicines to enhance athletic performance. The following herbs are currently used to enhance athletic performance, mostly regardless of scientific evidence of effect: Ginsengs, ephedra, guarana, Tribulus terrestris, kava, St. John's wort, yhombine and ginkgo. Controlled studies for the potential ergogenic effects of herbs are limited and the results are controversial. Future research on ergogenic effects of herbs should consider identity and amount of substance or presumed active ingredients administered, dose, and duration of test period, proper experimental protocols, and measurement of psychological and physiological parameters and measurements of performance pertinent to intended uses. This review focuses mainly on most common herbs that are used to enhance athletic performance at present.
