The variation of estrus in endocrinological levels and behaviour in Akkaraman ewes throughout the year

Abstract

In order to maximize lamb production and breeding strategies in sheep production (29,284 million, 2014) it is necessary to know the reproductive parameters of local breeds. The most popular breed in Turkey is Akkaraman breed (% 40 of all). Material and methods: An investigation was carried out to determine the reproductive activity of endocrinological and behaviour in 11 Akkaraman sheep,(age=2-2.5 years, body weight =74±7.7) throughout the year in Middle Anatolian (39.57 N, 32.53 W). The onset of estrous was detected by using an apron ram for a 30-minute period, twice a day. Blood samples collected twice a week were analyzed by Enzyme immunoassay for progesterone (p4, sensitivity in test 1.25 pg/ml), and by Radio immunoassay (125 I RIA, ICN, and sensitivity of test 10 pg/ml) for estradiol. Results: Estrous cycle lengths and estrous lengths were (mean±SD) 18.33±1.03 day, 35.16±5.95 hours, respectively. The breeding season lengths were 283±63.36 day and 229.64±63.74 day according to hormonal and behaviour data, respectively (P?0.0032). Incidence of estrous was high between August and March, however the highest peak was in October. The lowest peaks were both in June and July. Plasma progesterone levels were changed between 0.01-9 ng/ml throughout the year and 0.2-0.16 ng/ml in anoestrus. P4 level on the 11th day of the luteal phase of estrous was 3.73±1.50 ng/ml (n=11). Plasma estradiol level was 8.42±2.51 pg/ml between 1st and 2nd day and 3.50±1.50 pg/ml on day 15. The second peak of estradiol determined on day 11 of the estrous cycle was 6.09±2.87 pg/ml (n=11). Conclusion: Depending on the hormonal parameters, the breeding season is quite long and if the management conditions are appropriate, Akkaraman ewes can mate twice a year or three times in 2 years as natural.

Abstract

This study was carried out in White Karaman ewes (n=75) to increase reproductive performance and synchronize oestrous by using progestagen pessaries (40 mg FGA) and PMSG (500 I.U) during the breeding season. The oestrous was synchronized at the ratio of 97% and hand mating was performed only once after 48 hours of PMSG injection. Lambing was completed with in 10 days in treatment group and with in 45 days in control group (n=250). Fertility, multiple birth rates, fecondity and prolificacy in treatment and control groups were found as 97.00% and 91.00% (P<0.05), 67.00% and 29.00% (P<0.01), 165.3% and 117.2%, 170.0% and 129.0%, respectively. Progestagen and PMSG treatment syncorized oestrous effevtively and increasec fretility and prolificacy importantly in White Karaman ewes.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to determine the minimum effective doses of PGF2µ (Dinoprost trometamin) for induction of parturition. In the 1st group, parturitions were occured within mean (±SE) 35.92±2.433 hours after 5 mg PGF2µ injection and the 2nd group, parturitions were occured within mean (±SE) 36.17±2.800 hours after 10 mg PGF2µ injection on day 141 and 142 of gestation. Gestation lenght of the control group averaged (±SE) 148.56±6.30 (range 146-152). There was a significant difference on birth weigh of kids between the first and second groups. But only there was a significant difference between first group and control group. The birth weight of experiment groups less than control group.

Diagnosis of Ovulation Rate and Embriyonal, Foetal Development by Transrectal Ultrasonography in the White Goats Abstract: The aim of this study was to check the ovulation rate, early pregnancy diagnosis, and the number of embryos and foetuses, and embryonic and foetal development using either FGA with a low dose PMSG(250 I.U.) or FGA without of PMSG in 2.5- 5.5-year-old white goats (Saanen X Kilis).Transrectal ultrasonography with a 5-7.5 MHz linear probe was used 7, 26, 33, 40, 50 and 57 days after mating. The ovulation rate was determined by the counting of corpora lutea in both of the ovaries 7 days after mating. The ovulation rate at day 7 in the PMSG group was (SE±)10.833±0.79, and in the control group (SE±)7.00±1.22 (P=0.024); on the 26th day the embryo numbers were, respectively, (SE±)2.750±0.164, (SE±)2.167±0.307(P=0.97); on the 50th day foetus numbers were, (SE±)2.00±0.189, (SE±)1.333±0.211(P=0.037); the numbers of kids born were (SE±)1.875±0.227, (SE±)1.333±0.211 (P=0.1). The correct determination of twinning was formed after the 50th day. The number of kids result at the 50th day of gestation was found to be consistent with the number of kids born. The embryonic measurements at the 26.33 and 40th of in pregnancy were between (SE±) 4.918±0.297 mm and 8.561±0.651 mm. Concerning the days and the groups during the 50th and 57th day of gestation, the measurements of placentome, foetal head and truncus varied as follows: (SE±)13.183±0.305, 17.70±1.97; 12.07±1.82, 16.35±4.11; 16.27±1.35, 25.10±1.20mm. As a result, the ovulation rate in the goats by intrarectal ultrasonography method can be determined for various aims. Early pregnancy determination can be achieved with a high accuracy rate.

Elden aşımın yaptırıldığı günden itibaren (aşım 0.gün) 7. günde ve aşımdan sonraki 26,33,40,50 ve 57. günlerde transrektal ultrasonografi uygulaması, 5 ve 7.5 Mhz'e ayarlanabilen parmak prob ile yapılmıştır. Corpus luteumların sayılmasına bağlı olarak aşımdan sonraki 7.günde ovulasyon oranı PMSG grubunda (±SE)10.833±0.79, kontrol grubunda ise (±SE)7.00±1.22 (P<0.024); 26. gün embriyo sayısı sırasıyla, (±SE)2.750±0.164, (±SE)2.167±0.307 (P=0.97); 50.gün fötus sayısı (±SE)2.00±0.189, (±SE)1.333±0.211 (P=0.037); doğumdaki yavru sayısı (±SE)1.875±0.227, (±SE)1.333±0.211 (P=0.1) olarak bulunmuştur.Gebeliğin 26. gününde doğru pozitif tanı oranları PMSG grubunda %87.5 , kontrol grubunda % 100; duyarlılık oranları sırasıyla ,%87.5,%100 ve özgüllük oranları %100 ve %100 şeklinde saptanmıştır. ıkizliğin doğru olarak belirlenmesi 50. günden sonra gerçekleşmiştir. Doğumdaki yavru sayısı ile gebeliğin 50. günündeki yavru sayısı bulguları uyum içerisinde bulunmuştur.Gebeliğin 26. 33. ve 40.günlerinde embriyonal ölçüler (±SE)4.918±0.297 mm ile 8.561± 0.651mm arasında tespit edilmiştir. Endometrial Cytology Findings at Different Stages of Sexual Cycle, Pregnacy and Pyometra in Bitches

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate cellular changes of the uterus during pregnancy, pyometra and different phases of the sexual cycle in dogs using endometrial cytology. We used 30 uteruses from bitches of different ages and breeds and at heterogeneous stages of the sexual cycle (Group 1 proestrus n = 5, Group 2 estrus n = 5, Group 3 diestrus n = 5, and Group 4 anestrus n = 5) as well as animals with open cervix pyometra (Group 5 n = 5), and that were pregnant (Group 6 n = 5). The sexual cycle stage of the bitches was identified by vaginal cytology prior to ovariohysterectomy. The groups were selected from a large number of samples following vaginal cytology and ultrasonographic scanning. Blood samples (10 ml) were collected from the bitches by puncturing the v. cephalica antebrachi before surgery. The endometrium was revealed by longitudinal dissection of uterine horns after laparotomy. Uterine wall swabs were obtained from the mid part of one horn by rotating the cotton swabs on the endometrial surface. Cotton swabs were smeared over microscopic slides and the samples were dyed using the Papanicolau technique. The neutrophils, erythrocytes, bacteria and endometrial epithelial cells were evaluated for endometrial cytology. Cell scores were given that ranged from 1 to 4 according to frequency. In this study, variations in the type and density of cells according to stages of the sexual cycle, as well as pregnacy and pyometra cases, were observed. In the proestrus stage, an excessive number of erythrocytes, and a few neutrophils, endometrial epithelial cells and bacteria were found. In the estrus stage, a few neutrophils and erythrocytes and a moderate density of bacteria were observed, while in the diestrus stage, a few endometrial epithelial cells and neutrophils were noted. In the anestrus stage, a moderate density of degenerated endometrial epithelial cells, neutrophils and bacteria were observed. During pregnancy, a few epithelial cells and neutrophils were found. In pyometra cases, dense bacteria degenerated epithelial cells and neutrophils were identified. The number of neutrophils was lower in the progesterone dominated phase than in the estrus stage. In conclusion, endometrial cytology can be used to determine physiological and pathological changes in the endometrium and that when transcervical cannulation techniques are fully developed they will constitute a practical, cheap and reliable diagnostic tool to identify uterine disorders.

Bu çalışma ineklerde erken gebeliğin tanıs ı için tohumlama sonrası 21., 38. ve 46. gunlerde transrektal uh-rasorıografi. serum progesleron analizi ve vaginal smeann silolojik muayenesi gibi oç farklı metodun karşılaştınlması ve embriyonik Olumlerin belirşe nmes i amac ıyla yapıl d ı. Çalışma da materyalolarak Holstein ı rkı ndan, 3-6 yaşlı. 44 adet inek kıJI.. lan ıldı. Uhrason muayeoesinin 21. gOndesensnvıte ve speeütesr sırasıyla %82.3 ve %59.2 idi, fakat 38. ve 46. günlerde sı­ rasıyla %1QO. 100 ve %1QO. 100 Oıarak bulundu (P< 0.05). 21. günde gebe ve gebe olmayan ineklerde progesteron kon-santrasyonlan Onemli değişildikler gösterdi (P<: 0.001). Gebe ve gebe olmayan ineiderde toplam intermedier ve parabasal hücre sayılarında 21., 38. ve 46. gunlerde önemli değişiklilde r belirlendi. Sonuç olarak gebeliğin 38. ve 46. gOnlerinde inek· lerde transrektal ul1rasonografinin kullan ımı ile gebelik teşhisinin hızl ı , doğru ve güvenilir olarak yapılabileceği saptandı. Effect of dietary ß-carotene on the animal performance and fatty acid composition of adipose tissue of calf

Abstract

The fatty acid composition of adipose tissue was measured in 9 Black Pied calves to determine ß-carotene effect. Calves allotted to three groups were fed the diets containing 2 levels of ß-carotene, during the fattening period. All groups were fed ad libitum for six months and slaughtered. Adipose tissue samples were taken from subcutaneous, kidney, pelvic and abdomen and fatty acid composition was determined using gas chromatograph. When ß-carotene level was increased in the feed, the fat of calves became softer and their colour became yellow. The palmitic, oleic percentages changed on feeding ß-carotene and changes in fat location were significantly different (P < 0.01). Feeding ß-carotene and fat location affected the total saturated and unsaturated fatty acid percentage significantly (P < 0.01). In abdomen and pelvic fat, there was positive correlation between feeding p-carotene and total unsaturated fatty acids and the ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids whereas the correlation between total saturated fatty acids and p-carotene were negative. Addition of p-carotene in feed has increased oleic acid percentages in all fat samples

The aim of this study was to determine changes in some biochemical parameters in the healthy and infected sheeps and goats with Theileriosis. Sixty-five sheep and 67 goats were used in the study. Blood samples were tested for the presence of Theileriosis using PCR and RLB. 3.07% of sheep and 3.06% of goats blood samples were found positive with Theileria ovis. We observed decreases in the levels of total protein, albumin, glucose and increases in ALT and AST values in the infected animals compared with the healthy group. This study suggests that changes in some biochemical parameters may occur and in terms of PCR can be detected in infected animals that are in the early stage of disease and do not show any clinical symptoms.
