Today many cities are considered unsustainable owing to mainly the pressures of industrial development, technological improvements, and concentration of populations in many parts of the world. On that ground, beginning from the second half of 20’th century, the concept of sustainabilty has emerged as a new way of thinking. Urban sustainability in this context appears as an environmentally responsive philosophy for urban planning and design practices. As such since 1970’s, creating and/or enhancing sustainable environments have become the basic discourse of urban planning and development. In line with this, movements such as New Urbanism, Slow City, Ecological City and Green City have emerged in different parts of the world. Neverthless, it has recently been recognised that achieving sustainable urban environments is not only a matter of urban planning and design issues, but also relates to the fact that urban residents with environmentally conscious attitudes, behaviours and habits is an important aspect to fulfill the requirements for sustainable urbanism. In other words, without environmentally conscious residents the outcome of the work would be inadequate and incomplete. Hence, after 1990’s examinig everyday practices, attitudes, behaviours and lifestyles with an aim of achieving behavioral change towards more sustainable and environmentally conscious urban communities have increased. And it can be argued that all these related works have introduced a new concept called ‘ecological citizenship’. Within the objectives explained above, a framework for the research will be described with the help of a literature review in the article. With the consideration arguing that environmental behaviour is the nucleus of ‘ecological citizenship’, the article seeks to provide an understanding of environmental behaviour. In line with this, after briefly achieving an understanding of ‘sustainable urbanism’ as a background concept, everyday practices and behaviours in and around home will be conceptualised.. Than the research objectives including the research questions, aim and methodology will be highlighted in the article.

Ecological city, being one of the most prevailing and also promising paradigms within the sustainable urbanism discourse, suggests that the implementation of ecological principles to urban planning, design and management is essential in order to be environmentally and economically sustainable. This paradigm is generally categorized in four dimensions as ‘sustainable urban form’, ‘sustainable transportation’, ‘urban ecology and biodiversity’, ‘energy use and waste management’. Today, in an era of environmental deterioration, ‘Ecological citizenship’ emerges as a new addition to these dimensions as a non-physical aspect of ‘ecological city’. It is hypothesized in this paper that adopting ecological citizenship as a lifestyle among urban residents has a potential effect on the ecological quality of the city, and is therefore worth investigating. This study, in line with this, focuses on Famagusta, a city with rich traditional values, and tries to measure the potential for ecological citizenship among the local residents. Within this context, environmental attitudes and environmental behaviours of the residents were investigated carrying out a user survey among 165 local residents.

In recent years, environmental issues have been under considerable debate within the scientific community. In this context, environmental worldview has become a significant area of focus. In the light of recent studies it is understood that there are disparate variables influencing environmental worldview. Additionally it has been suggested that environmental worldview is a variable influencing environmental behaviour itself. As it is a significant aspect among the younger generations to adopt an environmentally responsible lifestyle, this study aimed at understanding the impact of several demographic variables such as gender and nationality on environmental worldview. In this research, environmental behaviour is further examined within the university students in Nicosia. A total number of 111 undergraduate students were chosen for this research. In the first section, several subjects were asked about their environmental knowledge and awareness. In the second section, with the help of Dunlop and Van Liere’s New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) scale, environmental attitudes of participants were measured, in order to understand the level of their existing worldview.

Environmental attitude studies have been a key focus within the environmental research field, as the significance of ecological citizenship for the sustainable development discourse has been highly recognized in recent years. In this context, the influence of demographic variables on environmental attitude is an emerging issue that is widely investigated in the west. In this respect, this paper seeks to understand the impact of demographic variables on the environmental worldview of Famagusta residents in order to make a scientific contribution to the possible construction of relevant strategies. A random sample of 165 residents within the territory of Famagusta Municipality was chosen for the survey. The survey tapped the relationship between environmental (ecocentric and anthropocentric) attitudes and selected demographic variables (age, gender, education and household income) and the survey results were evaluated with the help of SPSS (statistical package for social sciences) analyses. The findings reveal that younger respondents, women and the highly educated do not achieve higher scores of environmental attitudes and household income has a statistically significant nonlinear effect.
