Intellectual capital appears as the most important component of knowledge economy. The impact of intellectual capital on the general performance of the economy has been passing through labour productivity. It is very well known in the knowledge management literature that knowledge has become an engine of social, economic and cultural development in today’s world. Intellectual capital creates a value and increases the competitiveness of a nation. Involvement of education in economic growth occurs through creation of new knowledge and transfer of knowledge and information. Better educated individuals will later become an innovator or creator of new technology. Schools provide the education necessary to understand this new information and technology. Education is a vital factor for accumulation of intellectual capital to reach economic growth. In order to measure causality between education and economic growth in North Cyprus, Engle-Granger causality test in VAR model could be applied to the investigated period. The paper aims at trying to find answer by questioning ‘whether education causes to economic growth in North Cyprus? Or not’ based on the education variables such as literacy rate, general and technical school enrolment and higher education enrolment ratio. At this point, the empirical part of the study analyzes the relationship between education and economic growth in Northern Cyprus. As a small developing island with its eight universities, government assigning education is one of the locomotive sectors of North Cyprus economy. But islands have inadequate knowledge economy variables and have not yet constructed National Knowledge Management Strategy. Per capita income is following descending path, and economic performance not moving parallel with the educational progress. In conclusion, the reasons for this inefficient growth of the country will be discussed and by the light of the findings proposed suggestions will be made for North Cyprus.

Abstract It is very well known in the knowledge management literature that knowledge has become an engine of social, economic and cultural development in today's world. Involvement of education in economic growth occurs through creation of new knowledge and transfer of knowledge and information. Better educated individuals will later become an innovator or creator of new technology. Schools provide the education necessary to understand this new information and technology. Education is a vital factor for the accumulation of intellectual capital to reach economic growth. As a small developing island with its eleven universities, government assigning education is one of the locomotive sectors of the North Cyprus economy. Today's globalised world, transforming economies from traditional labour based production technique to modern knowledge based production technique is inevitable. Rise of knowledge and technology- intensive jobs and economic activities, investment in knowledge based assets and increasing well qualified and educated workforces indicates the knowledge based economic transformation is necessary and inevitable for rapid economic growth. The main purpose of this paper is to point out knowledge and knowledge based economies and creates both the public and government awareness about knowledge based economy in North Cyprus. The paper also investigates the importance of human capital, intellectual capital and intangible assets in production process and emphasizes the importance of technology based highly productive production systems and their impact on economic development. The study will be a reference to other small economies as well.

World population has been growing in recent years. This growing population has a problem with enough nutrition. Because of the restricted agricultural lands, necessity of getting more output with the same amount of input has been going out. In this way, scientific and technological studies try to find out to produce more goods with high quality, in the same restricted agricultural lands. Agriculture has gained an important role for the effective use of land. The aim of this study is to examine the importance of productivity in agriculture, towards sustainable development of North Cyprus. In this respect, the comparative analysis of agricultural sector productivity in the Northern Cyprus and European Union (EU) has been conducted. In North Cyprus most agricultural products and its prices are strongly affected by transport cost as well as import tariffs. General structure of the agriculture sector in North Cyprus is based on insufficient production with very low efficiency. To give an answer to demand of market, agricultural production must transfers from traditional agricultural production techniques to modern production techniques with high-level use of technological equipment. The study suggests that planned agricultural production is the only way to reach sustainable development. As a conclusion, the study emphasized the importance of the agricultural productivity, towards sustainable development of North Cyprus.

The paper empirically examines the relationship between financial development and economic growth in Northern Cyprus. Recent theoretical works show the importance of financial development on economic growth. In this study this closed association between financial development and economic growth econometrically is estimated by using Ordinary Least Square Estimation Method (OLS). The result showed that there is a negligible positive effect of financial development on economic growth of Northern Cyprus. Although Granger causality test showed that financial development does not cause economic growth, on the other hand there is evidence of causality from economic growth to the development of financial intermediaries.

Intellectual capital appears as the most important component of knowledge economy. It is very well known in the knowledge management literature that knowledge has become an engine of social, economic and cultural development in today’s world. Thus, education is a vital factor for the accumulation of intellectual capital to reach economic growth. There are thirteen universities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and higher education is a major sector. Income generated from the education sector as well as the accelerating number of universities are two important factors which TRNC government should pay attention to in regards to education and knowledge creation activities. The study aims to emphasize the importance of knowledge economy and to create both public and government awareness particularly for TRNC and for other small economies as well. The Engle-Granger Causality test in VAR model was used to analyze the causal relationship between education and economic growth in TRNC and the results indicate a positive impact of knowledge economy variables on the economy’s productivity level. Literacy rate, general and technical high school enrolment rate and higher education enrolment rate are used as knowledge economy variables. Furthermore, the extended Cobb-Douglas production function is applied for the 1977-2010 period and emphasizes the increasing returns to scale in the production process within a given period in TRNC. Overall results show that the TRNC economy has a potential to become a knowledge economy.
